Mitchell County Officials, State Fire Marshal to Collect Unwanted Ammunition

Mitchell County, IOWA — In their efforts to maintain safety in homes across the county, law enforcement and fire officials in Mitchell County, Iowa will host a collection day for unused, unwanted, or expired ammunition on Saturday, May 12, 2012 from 1:00-5:00 PM.

Mitchell County residents can drop off their ammunition at the below collection site:

Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office
211 South 6th St.
Osage, Iowa 50461

Once collected, the Office of the State Fire Marshal will transport the ammunition to Des Moines for safe disposal. Improper disposal of ammunition has potential environmental, health, and safety risks. This event makes it easy for residents to safely remove potentially dangerous ammunition from their homes. The proper disposal of old or unwanted ammunition can save lives by preventing it from landing in the hands of young children, and can also help protect the environment by keeping lead and other contaminants from seeping into the groundwater.

Remember: You should never use old and deteriorated ammunition in a firearm. Such ammunition can cause negligent discharges or delayed discharges.
