Girl Scout Troop Builds Squirrel Feeders for Lime Creek Nature Center

MASON CITY – The squirrels frequenting the feeders at Lime Creek Nature Center will find grabbing a peanut or corn snack a little easier, thanks to Mason City Girl Scout Troop 20014.

The second graders built six squirrel feeders to complete their “Take Action” project for girl scouts.  Three of the feeders have been installed in the Lime Creek Nature Center bird feeding area south of the building.  The other three will serve as replacements after the originals wear out.

Todd Hansen, Natural Resource Manager – Parks for the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board, said the feeders included “chair” feeders for corn cobs, and jar and box and lid feeders for peanuts.

The new feeders will provide more feeding stations for squirrels which will increase squirrel watching opportunities and lessen the competition for birds using other feeders.

“We are very grateful to Troop 20014 and their leaders for this excellent project,” Hansen said.

Troop 20014 Leaders are Holly Ott, Brenda Servidio and Alyssa Benson.  The scouts are Destiny Kaduce, Marisa Barragan, Miranda Pate, Jacie West, Paige Ott, Abbi Anderson, Keira Mirelli, Angelina Kilby, Chelsey Servidio, Kennedy Sanchez, Abby Eilers, Misty Lane, Brooklyn Reich, Madelyn Benson, Aubree Miles, Emma Fancher, Lily Ciska and Anna Troge.
