Grace R. Askeland, was born on the family farm near Pomeroy, Iowa on March 22, 1926 to Herman and Tena (Duis) Reitmeier. She passed away at Temperance Lake Ridge Senior Community in Sherburn, Minnesota on November 29, 2025 at the age of 99 years.

Grace attended school in Jolley, Iowa, and then worked at the hardware store in Ledyard for a couple years before marrying Herman Askeland, Jr. The couple were wed on February 16, 1947 in Ledyard, Iowa. Grace was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong. She was a member of the neighborhood birthday club. Grace was an excellent baker and cook; with pies being her specialty. The family enjoyed gathering at Grace and Herman’s on Christmas for traditional cod fish and lefse. Grace and Herman loved to go to dances. She also enjoyed bowling, golf, and poker. She was a determined woman and used her poker face on occasion outside of the card game.

Left to cherish Grace’s memory are her daughter, Gayle Askeland; daughter-in-law, Peggy Askeland; grandchildren, Troy (Dawn) Askeland, Jacque (Michael) Moats, Chad (Marguax) Askeland; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas, Kayla, Andrew, and Kelsi; and seven great-great grandchildren.

She has been preceded in death by her parents Herman and Tena Reitmeier; husband, Herman Askeland, Jr; sons, Charles and Tyrone; and her sibliings Tillie Jesse, Cass Reitmeier, Enno Reitmeier, Eldora Pierce, Kate Smith, Jack Reitmeier, Luetta Lottman, George Reitmeier, Harold Reitmeier, and Helen Hawley.
