SIOUX CITY – This middle-aged liberal woman easily won an Iowa Senate seat in a special election this week, and former President Barack Obama is ecstatic with the news that the powerful GOP stranglehold in Des Moines was slightly weakened.
According to the Sioux City Journal, “First-time Democratic Party candidate Catelin Drey, a 37-year-old Sioux City mom and strategic comms professional, appears set to win the Iowa Senate District 1 which would flip a Republican seat and break the GOP supermajority in the Iowa Senate.”
Unofficial results showed that Drey received 55% of the vote and her GOP opponent got 44%.

Former President Barack Obama took the news well, claiming, “Catelin Drey won a special election this week to flip a seat blue in the Iowa Senate and break Republicans’ supermajority. This seat had been in Republican hands for 13 years. When we are organized and support strong candidates who are focused on the issues that matter, we can win. Let’s keep this going.”
Republicans still dominate the Senate, 33-17, and hold the House and Governor’s office, along with almost every other meaningful position in state government – except Auditor. That seat is held by Rob Sand, who is running for Governor. After the election, Sand said, “Congrats to Catelin Drey on her victory tonight, breaking the supermajority in the Iowa state Senate. Iowans are ready for change.”
Democrat Nathan Sage is challenging Joni Ernst for her U.S. Senate seat, and he wasted no time in taunting her after the libs’ victory, saying, “You getting scared, Joni Ernst??
