MASON CITY – This convicted felon out of Floyd county now making his home in Mason City is behind bars today, accused of a violent crime against a child possibly involving torture.

Mason City police took a report on the morning of April 7 of a possibly endangered or abused child. Officers responded to the apartments at 510 South Illinois Avenue to investigate. Their investigation led them to suspect 32-year-old Charles Anthony Hampton of the following crimes:

– Possession of a controlled substance 2nd offense Marijuana

– Child Endangerment, Torture/Cruelty – Bodily Injury

Records show authorities applied for and executed a search warrant on Hampton on April 22.

Hampton was booked into the Cerro Gordo county jail on Thursday afternoon, April 24, and held on $6,000 cash-only bond.

Hampton (pictured at top) was convicted of a felony drug crime in 2022, in Floyd county, and sent for rehabilitation in the local residential holding center. He was put on probation for 5 years. Records show he has twice violated his probation, costing him 30 days and 40 days in jail.

Since migrating to Mason City, Hampton has been guilty of assault in 2022, just a couple of months after his sentencing in the drug crime case, costing him $560.12 and time served. Later that year, he was guilty of assault causing bodily injury after being charged by the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, costing him 7 days in jail and $494.50 to Iowa courts.

The Cerro Gordo county jail did not show Hampton as an inmate by Thursday evening, and no further details in the case were made available at this time.
