MASON CITY – An Illinois man was allegedly traveling well over the speed limit as he raced through North Iowa, and police say he was intoxicated and carrying illegal narcotics.

The Iowa State Patrol made a traffic stop on March 28, 2025, in Cerro Gordo county, of a vehicle traveling over 21 miles per hour over the posted speed limit, they claim. The Patrol says the driver, 29-year-old Ismael Vences, who claims to live in Toluca, Illinois, was also intoxicated and toting illegal drugs. After an investigation, they arrested Vences on the following charges:

– First-offense operating while intoxicated

– Speeding in a 55 miles per hour or less zone, but 21+ miles per hour over the limit

– Possession of marijuana

– Possession of drug paraphernalia

Vences (pictured at top) was taken to the Cerro Gordo county jail and booked in at 12:54 AM on March 28. He finally posted bond on March 3 and was released from jail. He now faces an arraignment on the afternoon of April 8, 2025.
