Iowa home fire chases occupants from structure, causes $100K damage

IOWA CITY – A residential house fire in this Iowa college town sent the residents fleeing and caused upwards of $100,000 in damages, authorities say.

The Iowa City Fire Department (ICFD) responded to a report of a garage fire at 1020 Fifth Ave. at 12:15 AM, Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024.

Responding units arrived on scene within five minutes of being dispatched and found an active fire in the attached garage of the residence, with heavy smoke throughout the single-story home. The two occupants of the home had safely exited after being alerted by their smoke detectors.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of arrival, after causing heavy damage to the garage and smoke damage throughout the residence. The total loss is estimated at $100,000 and the fire remains under investigation by the ICFD Fire Marshal’s Office.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The fire department was assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, and MidAmerican Energy.
