IOWA CITY – An Iowa woman participating in an organized bike ride event was struck head-on by a driver and killed.

Police say the tragic accident took place at 4:06 PM on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024. The Iowa City Police Department responded to the 3300 Block of Rohret Road to investigate a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle. The cyclist, 41-year-old Ashlee Hopkins of Iowa City, was hit head-on by a car while riding her bike during an event called Farm Cycle. The ride is “a culinary adventure through some hidden gems of Johnson County where you will meet local farmers, take farm tours, and eat and drink delicious local food and craft beverages al fresco. Each stop is paired with a chef serving gustatory delights with ingredients from the farm.”
Police did not yet release the name of the driver of the car.
Police later reported that Hopkins died on Monday, September 23, 2024. According to an obituary, “her injuries were too severe. On September 23rd, following an honor walk at UIHC surrounded by friends and family, Ashlee made a final gift of her life by donating her liver to save another.”
This incident remains under investigation by police.
