Margaret Funk, 95, of Mason City, formerly of Manly, passed away July 29, 2024 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday August 2, 2024 at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St., NE, Mason City, IA 50401. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Margaret was born June 10, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas; daughter of Antonio and Ernestina (Perez) Luna. The family migrated to Iowa to work in the fields. After many years of moving back and forth, the family finally settled down after buying their home here. Margaret was united in marriage to Louis C. Mayo on April 3, 1953. To this union, they were blessed with five children, Clarence, twins Tony and Earl plus a second set of twins Lucinda and Felix. They divorced September 8, 1961. Later she married Jacob P. Funk on July 25, 1964 and they remained together until his death on December 2, 1997. Margaret was a hard working woman; during her childhood, she worked in fields harvesting potatoes, pumpkins and onions. During her adult years from 1949 to 1963 she worked at: Katz Cleaners, Mason City Laundry, Deckers and Sons, St Joseph Mercy Hospital, Benn’s Nursing Home, Grupp’s Bakery and Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Family meant the world to Margaret. Taking care of those she loved was one of her greatest joys. Being together and spending time with family was very important to her. There was no need for a special occasion for her to return to Mason City to see those she cherished. She loved music and dancing; tinkering on various instruments including the organ, accordion, and piano. Margaret was also skilled with her hands and enjoyed embroidery and gardening. Caregiving was her passion and outside of her family she also loved taking care of horses even if she didn’t ride them. She and Jacob would also watch baseball together; when he played softball she always enjoyed watching him as well. Cooking was yet another of her passions; her tortillas were well known and some might say they were better than her mother’s.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Gloria (Jeff Lau) Fiedler, Antonio Mayo, Lucinda (Rick) Summers, and Felix (Linda Johnson) Mayo; grandchildren, Ricky (Amanda) Mayo, Brad (Danielle) Mayo, Jasmine (Josh) Roosa, Lindsay (Chris Stone) Mosher, Sherri Hille, Tracy Funk, Rose (Leroy) Miller, Pam Brager, Jeannie (Dave) Coulter, Julie Funk, Jill Estal, Donnie Funk, Dave (Beth) Funk, Robert Summers, Tony Summers, Dawson Summers; many great-grandchildren; siblings, David (Joan) Luna of Bellville, IL, Nancy (Arnie) Wilkerson of Sacramento, CA, and Orpha (Gary) VanDusseldorp of Mason City; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Preceding her in death are her sons, Earl and Clarence Mayo; parents, Antonio and Ernestina; brothers, Ralph, Joe, and Leo Luna; and sisters, Cruz Garza, and Olga and Andrea Luna; and step-sons, Jake Jr. Funk, Donald Funk and Dennis Funk.
