JoAnne Virginia Peterson, 84, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 9:30 am, Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Epiphany Parish – Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 North Adams Ave., Mason City, IA with Rev. Neil Manternach, Celebrant. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

JoAnne was born May 10, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, daughter of Virgil and Sidney (Downey) Seger. She graduated from Boone Valley High School in Renwick, Iowa with the class of 1958 and later earned a nursing degree with the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. She used her degree to later teach others at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City. JoAnne married Jon Peterson on June 20, 1964, and they were blessed with two daughters.

JoAnne was a devoted member of Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church. Her faith was profound, and she ensured she instilled the same values into the family and people she cared for. It was very important to her that her children prayed together, and she taught them that jealousy should never hold a place in their hearts or homes. JoAnne was known for her ability to listen. She always gave people her undivided attention and her love was palpable to all that knew her. Her compassion for others was boundless; caring for people was her greatest joy. JoAnne had a love for nature; especially the more subtle beauties it had to offer. While she often portrayed herself as a sweet woman; there was a sneaky wit about her and an underlying twinkle of mischief about her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Christine Peterson, Mason City, Julie (David) Burns, Woodbury, MN; grandchildren, Joseph Burns Menominee, WI and Maya Burns Woodbury, MN; brother, Dick (Marvel) Seger Mission, TX; sisters, Mary (Chuck) Reckard, Arnolds Park, IA, Susan Behr, Mason City; brothers-in-law, Bobby Rummens, Cascade, IA, and Bob (Jeannie) Peterson, St. Ansgar, IA; sister-in-law, Pat (Scott) Lavold Plymouth, MN; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Jon; parents; sister, Nancy Rummens; and brother-in-law, Chuck Behr.
