Mason City woman hurt when car struck by train in Rudd

RUDD – A Mason City woman attempted to go around the arm barriers activated at a railroad crossing in Rudd and her car was struck by a train.

The incident took place on September 24, 2023. At 7:37 PM that evening, a 2012 Hyundai Sonata driven by 36-year-old Yesenia Claypool of Mason City was traveling northbound in 6th Street near the railroad crossing. The Iowa State Patrol says Claypool tried to drive around the extended arm barriers at the rail crossing. Her Sonata was then struck by a Canadian Pacific train on the driver’s side.

As a result of the accident, Claypool was transported to mercy one hospital in mason city due
to the extent of her injuries by a Charles City ambulance.
