CLEAR LAKE – A Mason City woman accused of snatching a purse at a popular Clear Lake watering hole got a deferred judgement but must pay thousands in restitution.

Shalonda Ackerman, 36 years old from Mason City, was arrested in September of 2019 after an extensive investigation by the Clear Lake police department. Ackerman took an unattended purse and its contents from Rookies, on Main Avenue in Clear Lake, on August 17, 2019 at around 10:55 PM. Inside the purse were credit cards and a diamond wedding ring valued at approximately $2,950.00. Several purchases were made in Mason City using some of the cards inside the purse.

Ackerman was charged with:

– Theft 2nd Degree – A Class D Felony

– Two Counts of Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card Under $1,500.00 – Aggravated Misdemeanor (each count)

In a plea deal reached in December, Ackerman pled guilty to felony second-degree theft while the other charges were dropped by prosecutors. Ackerman must pay $4,889.93 in restitution. She received a deferred judgement and must serve probation.

  1. …before you pay back any monies owed…please do something with your “hair”! You will look better the next time you go to court…and you will have a “next time”!

  2. Another fantastic plea bargain. Gotta love the American system of injustice. Tell me, why are attorneys so afraid to do their jobs and punish criminals? Hmm, maybe too much work, might cause them to actually have to do something.

      1. No it’s not, they want to decriminalize so much stuff, can’t have they Democrat base getting felonies and not being able to vote.(yes, assuming that everything isn’t paid off yet.)
