Floyd county sex offender dies in prison

NEWTON – A Nora Springs man serving a long prison sentence for sexual abuse of a minor has died in prison, officials say.

Ronald James Calvert was pronounced dead due to an unexpected medical emergency at 11:44 a.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at the Newton Correctional Facility (foul play not suspected). Calvert was 77 years old at the time of his death.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Calvert had been serving a 25-year sentence for the crime of Sexual Abuse 2nd Degree from Floyd County. His sentence began on May 6, 2014.
