MASON CITY — Mayor Bill Schickel will deliver his “State Of The City” message as one his first official acts at the city council meeting Tuesday.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the Mason City Room of the Public Library, 225 2nd St. SE.

The theme of his talk will be “a new beginning for Mason City,” Schickel said. “As always the public is invited. It will also be a great time to meet the newly elected council members.”
The new members are Tom Thoma, John Jaszewski and Will Symonds.

Schickel also announced he will be holding regular office hours at City Hall from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Fridays, beginning January 5.

  1. A new beginning….. yawn. Is there another musician that stopped by and used the urinal at some hotel in 1940 that a handful of blue-hairs can salute, build another monument or building to honor him or her and claim that if we do that tourism will boom in MC?! i remember when the good ‘ol boy Mayor Carl Miller proclaimed this and shoved it down everyone’s throats. Then the guy skips town and the city is in debt from THAT…. and are you kidding me? The Music Man Square bringing in huge tourism money? Yah right. ….. and some old home nobody gives a rip about? What MC is really good at is wasting money and doing things that are contributing to the town dying even faster than it already is. Such poor leadership…..a true embarrassment on so many levels. The goal should be doing things that make MC an attractive place to live and for young people to come back to…..not gonna happen with closed minds and with people who use their positions for their own personal agenda.

    1. Ben, instead of blaming old blue hair’s you should go after the real culprit, the Chamber of so called Commerce. They have been behind everyone of the schemes. The local government are just puppets for them. It has always been that way in this town. It is run by special interest, “Chamber of Commerce”.

      1. The Mason City Chamber is a lobbying organization for the rich that uses City Hall and their “elected” stooges as a war chest for their pet projects and to run the town. They hide in that tax-free palace 9 N. Federal built by the taxpayers.

  2. Shickel is a wimp. Skips big meetings. Has no ideas or vision. New beginnings of get absolutely nothing done. Also I hear there is turmoil with city employees that if John lee is appointed mayor pro tem. They do not trust him with his leaking confidential information. Most feel he should have resigned. Teachers at the high school say he is not that smart either.

  3. He’ll cancel his office hours once he gets a visit like Bookmeyer had a few days ago – some lady really ripped him a good one.
