United Airlines released a statement following the incident, which took place Sunday, April 9:
“Flight 3411 from Chicago to Louisville was overbooked. After our team looked for volunteers, one customer refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily and law enforcement was asked to come to the gate. We apologize for the overbook situation. Further details on the removed customer should be directed to authorities.”
Reportedly, the plane was over-booked by 4 people, so the airline asked people to give up their seats voluntarily. When that did not work, the airline randomly chose 4 people to vacate their seats. On person they chose was said to be an Asian man – a doctor – and he refused to get up. United called security leading to the man bloody and confused. He was dragged semi-conscious from the plan as stunned passengers looked on.
He apparently somehow got back on the plane and asked repeatedly “just kill me”.

LVS Airlines. Cheaper, Meaner and always plenty of seats available. Going nowhere.
Once again guilty until proven innocent.(for united) Do a background on this doctor and you will find that he has been convicted of 6 felonies, has had his license revoked, has a history of mental problems. He was asked to leave the plane and refused. Would any of you be happier if he went off while the plane was in the air and he went out of control?
If the dude was a security risk he should not have been allowed on the plane in the first place. And if he was as much of a blatant risk as you state then why didn’t airline screening catch him? Your argument still paints United as the biggest looser,
“Your argument still paints United as the biggest looser”
No it does not. It paints David Dao as a mentally unstable criminal and pervert. And while there was no way to know a-priori that he was a pederast drug pusher, his mental health issues should have been obvious to anyone who watched the video.
US Law gives the pilot absolute right to dictate who flies and who does not. There is no public vote and no negotiation. Refusing to cooperate is no different from refusing to cooperate with Law Enforcement. And when you do that, and then physically resist detention, sometimes the scuffle that invariable follows result in a bruise here and there. Happens to hundreds of confrontative, drugged up trash bags every day. Big Deal.
This has all the class of a copy and paste post from a rogue web site. Care to share where you stole this information without giving credit to the author?
What are you babbling about, idiot boy? The post is mine, composed by yours truly in its entirety. The information provided is widely reported in main stream media, e.g. Washington Times. Since YOU accuse me of plagiarism, i suggest YOU link to the post I supposedly plagiarized. I’m waiting…
Or maybe you can copy and paste this? https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/compost/wp/2017/04/12/crucified-man-had-prior-run-in-with-authorities/?utm_term=.16af9b7b8971#comments
What are you talking about? There is 1k comments on that article – which one do you mean I would have copy-pasted? I do comment @ WaPo as well but do not believe I cross-posted anything on that article.
That selfish a-hole refused to leave after being drawn at random, typical doctor holding the whole plane up because he thought he was more important than everyone else. If I’d been there he wouldn’t have looked so pretty
I hope this guy sues everyone involved in this and wins enough to
change the nazi tactics tactics the airline uses!
United Airlines didn’t not forcibly remove this gentleman. United asked him to leave the plane in accordance with a contract he agreed to when he purchased the ticket. After he refused to leave, this became criminal trespass and law enforcement was called who then forcibly removed the man. Why is anyone upset with United? Be upset with law enforcement . Or be upset with this gentleman for refusing to comply with a law enforcement officers orders.
Let me guess, Republican? Always taking the side of the corporation instead of the consumer. Why are people upset with United? Because clearly they had many other options than how this transpired. It’s going to be a PR nightmare for them. You probably think rape victims were asking for it too right?
What does political affiliation have to do with any of this? If it bothers you that much, I don’t align myself with any political party – doing so is for the weak minded (much like religion).
Have you small town yokels never flown before? Every airline does this! All the time!! It sucks when you’re randomly selected to get lose your seat, but the end result will be much better when you act like an adult rather than a spoiled, entitled child.
No political affiliation, gotcha. So who did you vote for Trump or Clinton? I’m going to bet $100 it was Trump. Anyway, moving on. Small town yokel, that’s a good one. What big city do you live in? Lastly, UA investors lost $1B in valuation since this incident and the CEO has admitted wrong doing. The fact that they do this all the time doesn’t make it right. If airlines want to overbook so their crews can fly on cancellations that’s great. But if there are no cancellations the crew needs to be given alternative transportation, not the paying customer.
That would have meant another flight not being able to leave you dimwit. What we got here is your typical average doctor who feels he is worth a little more than everyone else and so the rules shouldn’t apply to him. Hundreds of people ended up late for their destination because of his little fit. And yeah I voted for Hillary – not all off us are bleeding heart cretins like yourself.
And the next time you default on a contract I hope your face isn’t bloodied.
The next time you disobey repeated instructions form a law enforcement officer, you may get your face bloodied when you’re flailing around like a dang child when seated in tight quarters
they overbook so that when people don’t show up for their flight they still have a full plane. why not tell the people that they overbook at the time of ticketing that they are overbooking and that being the overbooked passengers there is a chance they wont get on the plane instead of throwing off passengers that may have been booked for months to make a seat for the just ticketed passenger, seems to make sense to me
Not surprised that this happened, just take a look at the United airlines training video.

Thanks. Your post made my day!
From what I read in other articles, it was United employees that needed those 4 seats.
They said I was a flight crew going to their next assignment. Airlines pull that crap all the time. I don’t blame the guy for being upset. He paid for his flight and then was being removed because they overbooked. They offered $800 for the seats. They will pay a lot more than that to this guy.
