From Senator Amanda Ragan –

As Independence Day approaches this Friday, July 4, I am hopeful the weather will cooperate so that we can all enjoy fireworks, parades, picnics, ball games and more, as we celebrate with family and friends.
If you are still looking to make plans for the weekend, there are a few state park campsites available for last-minute reservations. To reserve a site, go to http://iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com.
Many of our state parks have seen some damage in recent weeks because of strong winds and flooding. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), staff is clearing downed limbs, cleaning up and making repairs. A few state parks are closed or partially closed. For the latest information, go to www.iowadnr.gov/parks and click on the Closure Information link on the left.
Because of bad weather throughout June, the Governor has already proclaimed disaster emergencies in 48 counties, including Franklin and Butler. This proclamation allows state resources to be used to respond to and recover from the storms. Franklin is also among 25 counties in which the proclamation has activated the Iowa Individual Assistance Program.
The Individual Assistance Program provides up to $5,000 for households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. That works out to a maximum annual income of $39,580 for a family of three. Grants are available for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and for the expense of temporary housing. Applications and instructions are available through the Iowa Department of Human Services at http://dhs.iowa.gov/disaster-assistance-programs.
If you are impacted by storms or flooding in Iowa and have questions, contact the Iowa Concern Hotline at 1-800-447-1985.
TRAVEL SAFELY THIS 4TH OF JULY
If you are planning to be on the roads this Independence Day, please drive safely. For the latest on road conditions, traffic and construction, visit www.511ia.org.
Half of the traffic fatalities on Iowa roads during last year’s Fourth of July holiday were alcohol related, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. In an effort to keep everyone safe as they travel this year, more than 250 city, county and state law enforcement agencies across Iowa will be on the roads in a special Traffic Enforcement Program from July 1 to 7.
Ultimately, the goal is zero fatalities. A new “Zero Fatalities” program aims to focus more attention on Iowa’s traffic fatalities and find solutions to end them. Last year, 317 people died on our roads and another 129 have died so far in 2014. To bring those numbers down, we all must give our full attention to driving when we are behind the wheel. That means buckling up, slowing down, focusing on the road, staying alert and driving sober—during the 4th of July and all year long.

You “die hard” Dems are the most close minded people. So loyal to your party that the ability to understand what really happened is not possible. Not an open minded person among you Dems.
Over the last 40 years my personal purchasing power went up with Republican polices and down with Democratic polices.
As a union man I voted for Democrats only to find that once in office they shit on my head and emptied my wallet. Republicans shit on my head but didn’t empty my wallet.
Sorry
Ms. Ragan,
The Government has put me in the poor house. Taxes, Taxes, Taxes, and Government fees keep me broke. Your whole article is about government, government, government. The working man is paying for all of this.
The Democrats have decimated the Middle Class and it’s uncanny how you Dem’s can propagandize the truth and the dumb voters keep you fools in office.
Thanks for nothing.
A little revisionist history there, eh?
It was Ronald Reagan and his Wall street buddies that began the demise of the American dream.
Reagan was a duplicitous ass who spoke with a forked-tongue and used the rhetoric of apocalyptic imagery to instill a climate of fear and docility in America.
While he and his rich cronies exponentially increased the ranks of the nation’s “working poor.”
The vast majority of this country’s ills can be traced directly back to good ol’ Ronnie.
🙂 🙂 🙂
Still drinking the cool-aid I see. It’s been Democratic policies and legislation that put this country in the tank.
Ronald Regan is the best President this country has had since I have been alive.
You can slander and put out all the propaganda you want, but my wallet tell me where the proof is.
As for the rich, good for them. At least they
didn’t screw the working man like the Government has. In fact, because of the wealth making money it helps all the working people. It’s…
called Jobs!
Always interesting to see a response from one the misguided, misinformed, deluded and delusional.
Reagan created jobs, my ass.
Reagan should go down as one of the worst Presidents in US history, even worse than Nixon or Dubya.
Even Reagan’s director of the OMB, David Stockman acknowledged that Reagan’s economic policies destroyed the American dream and put the country in a downward spiral.
REAGAN is the WORST US President:
The Noise Control Act of 1972 was the first federal law to regulate noise pollution. It acknowledged the harms of noise and established the Office of Noise Abatement and Control (ONAC) within the Environmental Protection Agency. In 1981, ONAC was de-funded by the Reagan administration and has not been reestablished. Reestablishing ONAC is Noise Free America’s top priority.
peter is nothing but a broken record. Grow up would ya and shut the f##k up.
Damn Peter, give it a rest already. there are more important issues in this world other than you not like motorcycles.
After Reagan took occupancy of the White House, one of the first things he did was ordered workers to “take those damn solar panels off my roof”, after Jimmy Carter his predecessor had them installed. Reagan was a nasty old POS who helped big OIL and stifled public transpo, and attempted to defund and rollback environmental protections. But Americans love someone who can enchant them. Idiots. If I could flip the flag upside down, I would. This IS a state of distress.
Here are the facts. While Carter was president from 1976 to 1980 my wages went down $3.28 per hour. When Ragen took office interests rates were 21%.
By 1985 my union wages went back up the $3.28 plus an additional $2.40 per hour.
Reagan cut Federal income taxes 33% and the economy boomed for the next 15 years.
Interest rates dropped back down to 7% and continued to drop.
Yes, Ronald Regan was one of this country’s greatest presidents.
Oh, and he was not an…
an “establishment” president or “Washington” insider.
Right Winger? Not.
I am about as liberal as you can get on social issues.
When it comes to economic issues I vote my pocket book.
If I can’t take care of myself I can’t take care of anyone else. Don’t be telling me I am selfish because I believe you need to make your own way and not rely on the Government.
Currently I belong to the Cynic Party, I do start each day with a feeling of hope.
Then I run into you nonsensicl Dem’s.
con’t
“but my wallet tell me where the proof is”.
Typical right winger translation: “I got mine so screw everybody else”
That is precisely the attitude taking this country down.
Take a history lesson. The truth is the truth. Bill Clinton got us out of debt, helped amass a surplus and the most recent poll has him as the number 1 most popular President in American history.
Then the Bushes come along and what happens? Just take a look around. The only people benefiting are the top 1% of the country. Let’s try not to put feathers on a cat and call it a chicken!! It is what it is. The R’s have nearly ruined this country. Not one policy helps the middle class.
OMG, The pervert Clinton is one of the worst.
Bill Clinton pushed NAFTA and GATT down our throats and Ross Perot’s sucking sound is loud and clear. Millions of Jobs gone thanks to Clinton.
Out of debt? Yes but only because of the dot.com boom and he gutted the military. If the computer age hadn’t happened the balanced budgeted would not either.
Take off the rose colored glasses and get to the truth of it all.
Clinton is also the one who put in NAFTA and cost this country thousands of jobs and who knows how much money. He also turned the White House into a whore house. How can anyone say he was a great president. After all he WAS IMPEACHED. Just like what is going to happen with Obama.
Ya, all on Clinton – rolls eyes.
On December 17, 1992, the following met to sign NAFTA
U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas, each responsible for spearheading and promoting the agreement, ceremonially signed it.
In the US, Bush, who had worked to “fast track” the signing prior to the end of his term, ran out of time.
The Congress agreement’s supporters included 132 House Republicans and 34 in the Senate.
Clinton “gutted the Military”? – rolls eyes again.
The spending cuts usually attributed to President Clinton were actually begun during the Reagan administration’s second term, when the United States was still engaged in the Cold War.
Between 1987 and 1998 the defense budget fell for 11 straight years as Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton—two Republicans and a Democrat—brought spending down to more sustainable levels as the Cold War wound down.
I don’t know if any of these conspiracy theories are correct, if they are every president since Kennedy has had a hand in bringing this country down no matter what good they have done. Everybody that sucks the governments d##k blames bush for the economy but in reality it is the democrats fault, anybody remember Frank and Dodd?

Wow maybe, now you are linking to a libertarian website.
Libertarianism philosophy is like a cockroach that scurries away once you shine the light of reason on it.
It doesn’t matter which website I get it from it is history, it happened so I could go to a republican website or a democratic website and it would say the same thing. It seems that if you don’t like the truth you put down the source. It just isn’t you that does that it is everybody, unless it is common core, you CAN’T change history.
BCN
The gap between the rich and the poor as grown more under this president than any other in the last 50 years. All of the Obama’s wall street buddies got richer and richer while the working person’s buying power has gone down. Just look at the price of gas since this president has been in office it has not be below $3 that hurt the working person/ middle class. The democratic policy only hurt the middle class and keep them from getting ahead
hey BCN
Obama just spoke at a $10,000.00 per plate dinner. The rich keep getting richer with there rich Democratic buddies running the show.
You dummies want to believe it is the Republicans sticking it to the Working Class when it is and always has been the Democrats.
All the liberals know how to do is lie. Get over yourself and your close minded lying crap.
Your name should be delusionalist not realist. It’s amazing how the GOP can destroy the middle class and then have all the hillbillies believe it was the other guys.
it is the other guys though.
@maybe-They always love to blame someone else for their mistakes. It must be Bush’s fault that Obama and his followers are traitors.
Hypocrite:
One who criticizes for doing something then turns around and does the very thing to which he was objecting.
Q: How many Neanderthal right wingers like LVS and maybe does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None, they would rather sit in the dark and blame Obama
who is the bigger fool? There are tons of evidence to blame Obama yet all the puppets blame bush solely because the puppetmaster tells them to.
It’s not personal, just a statement of fact.
@Anonymous-what would a Anonymous, sneaky, cowardly TROLL like you know about facts? You are a nothing, a naught with a hole in it. Just a big mouth troll who knows nothing except to snipe at people that are smarter and better than you will ever be. Come on coward, snipe while being a troll some more. It is all you are good for.
@SUCKS-By your own admission you do not live here so shut up about things that do not concern you.
as an American sucks does have the right to say what he thinks but as a drugged out fool he also has the right to make an ass of himself.
Look on the bright side maybe, and I use that term sardonically…no one on NIT seems to give a crap what all of us write anyway, as evidenced by the limited responses. Matt claims thousands of readers? Oh Really? Surely a few dozen at least would come out of the woodwork to at least TELL US they think we’re full of shit. But with me, they need to prove their claim, and so I could take their silence, as a silent concurrence with my views and policies???
I don’t believe a thing Amanda Ragan says. She is nothing but a wind bag politician that has been in the legislature way to long. Vote her the hell out.
I will be supporting and voting for Shawn Dietz this fall. If you want a true change and someone who will be fiscally responsible, you should consider voting for Shawn Dietz too!!!
Vote Dietz
