Feulner Named Assistant AD for Academic Services

AMES, Iowa – Patrice Feulner, who spent eight years working in Student-Athlete Development at Arizona State, including the last year and a half as Assistant Athletic Director of Student Athlete Development, has been named Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services at Iowa State, announced today by the Iowa State Athletics Department.

Feulner replaces Tommy Powell, who led ISU’s academic unit since 2007 and is now serving in a similar role at Syracuse. She will assume her new role at Iowa State beginning Jan. 6.

“Patrice has an exciting vision for providing academic support to our student-athletes,” said David Harris, Iowa State Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. “She brings great leadership, passion and qualifications to this position. I look forward to working with her to provide the very best in academic support and student-athlete development to all Cyclone student-athletes.”

A native of St. Charles, Ill., Feulner served as the academic coach for many sports in her tenure with the Sun Devils, including football, men’s basketball, baseball, wrestling softball, soccer and men’s and women’s swimming & diving. She helped catapult both baseball and men’s hoops to the top of the Pac-12 Conference in both Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR).

Feulner helped baseball increase its APR score of 893 to 992 in 2011-12 (top 10 percent nationally), the second-best sum in the league. Men’s basketball also increased its APR from 885 to 973 under her watch. ASU’s overall GSR was raised to 82 percent this past year (2006 cohort) from 69 percent (2001 cohort).

Feulner’s administrative duties at ASU included the following: direct supervision of academic coaching staff, coordinate all faculty and staff development programs with campus, manage office budget and train staff on APR and GSR. As an academic coach, Feulner was responsible for coordinating tutoring and mentoring programs, tracking academic progress, facilitating study hall programs and assisting student athletes with major and career exploration.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Cyclone family as Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services at Iowa State,” Feulner said. “The current staff has done an outstanding job supporting student-athlete development leading to graduation. I look forward to partnering with coaches, staff and the campus community to continue to elevate Academic Services to be leaders in our industry.”

A 2004 graduate of ASU, Feulner was a two-time team captain and honorable mention Pac-10 selection for the Sun Devil soccer team from 2000-03, earning District VIII Academic All-America accolades in 2002. She was a member of the Arizona Heatwave USL W-League from 2004-05 and the Chicago Cobras USL W-League from 1999-2004.

Feulner earned a Masters degree in Higher and Postsecondary Education in 2007 from Arizona State.

She is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletes (N4A), has earned the N4A’s Individual Certification, completed the N4A Professional Development Institute leader manager track (2012) and served as a panelist for the NCAA Life Skills Symposium in 2013.
