Construction worker seriously injured after being run over by excavator

DES MOINES – A construction worker was seriously injured Monday in an accident on Interstate 80.

According to a report, a construction vehicle – a 1994 John Deere 595D Excavator – was westbound on the outside shoulder when a fellow construction company worker walked into the path of the vehicle. The construction worker, Trinidad Banderas, 50, of Marshalltown, was run over by the front tires of the excavator resulting in serious injuries to the pedestrian.

Banderas was taken to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

  1. Excavator have a lot of blind spots and the operator can not always see. You have to be aware when you are around them (or any piece of heavy equipment).

  2. I love excavators and backhoes. My favorite thing to do. I’m running an old JD 400. Runs great. Safety first. Accidents like this should never occur, was the guy like 4′ tall and not easily seen? Even so, HE should always be aware of his position on a construction site. Excavators are HEAVY and POWERFUL! I can cut through and lift up a thousand pounds of wet muck. Hydraulics aren’t to be messed with.
