Cubs sign third-round pick, outfielder Jacob Hannemann, and seventh-rounder, right-handed pitcher David Garner

logo_chicago_cubsCHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today signed two of their selections from the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, third-round pick Jacob Hannemann, an outfielder from Brigham Young University, and seventh-round selection, right-handed pitcher David Garner from Michigan State University.

The Cubs have signed 11 players from this year’s draft, including three top-five picks and five top-10 selections.

Hannemann, 22, was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year this season after spending two years on a Mormon mission. He batted .344 (74-for-215) with 16 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 29 RBI, a .415 on-base percentage and a .553 slugging mark in 51 games for BYU, going 14-for-15 in stolen base attempts. Hannemann batted .385 with a .453 on-base percentage and a 1.084 OPS in his final 42 contests beginning February 27.

Garner, 20, struck out a team-high 70 batters in 83.1 innings for the Spartans in 2013, his junior season. He made 14 starts, going 4-5 with a 4.10 ERA (38 ER/83.1 IP), while walking 27 batters. His 70 strikeouts ranked fourth in the Big Ten. Last summer, Garner was named a 2012 Cape Cod League All-Star, posting a 3.12 ERA (15 ER/43.1 IP) with 41 strikeouts for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. His 192 career strikeouts rank sixth in Michigan State history.

The players highlighted in bold below have thus far signed with the Cubs ahead of the July 12 deadline.
