Toronto eclipses Chicago in population

TORONTO, March 6 (UPI) — Toronto has moved ahead of Chicago as the fourth largest city in North America, population figures indicate.

The latest census data from Statistic Canada indicates Toronto’s population was 2,791,140 as of July 1 or 84,000 more than the 2,707,120 who live in Chicago, the Toronto Star reported.

Statistics Canada said during the past 12 months Toronto’s population increased by 38,000 compared to Chicago’s 12-month growth of 11,000.

“I think it’s indicative of the fact that something right is happening here, when people are flocking to the city as opposed to going other places,” said Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday.

Size matters for cities.

Besides bragging rights, growing cities tend to accrue economic benefits, stronger exposure and presence on the world stage and more clout at the national level.
