HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 16 (UPI) — U.S. actor Joaquin Phoenix said he simulates the act of drowning for a PETA ad to show the “slow, painful” death for fish when they’re pulled from the water.

The spot is meant to demonstrate the “frightening” death for “more than 1 trillion fish every year,” the ad says.

Phoenix was inspired to become vegan by a fishing outing when he was 3 years old, The Hollywood Reporter reported Friday.

“To this day it is a vivid memory,” he said in an interview in 1996. “My family and I were on a boat catching fish. As one fish was caught, he was writhing. Then he was thrown against the side of the boat. You couldn’t disguise what it was. This was what we did to animals to eat them. The animal went from a living, vibrant creature fighting for life to a violent death.”

  1. This isn’t about animals killing each other for survival. This is about humans torturing animals. It’s OK to kill animals to eat. It’s not OK to torture animals for the fun of it.

  2. PETA has become a cult. While there was and is some people that commit cruel acts upon animals for fun or sadistic reasons, PETA has gone too far.

This country needs more people to laugh them into non-existence.

  3. When is PETA going to do something about all the animals that eat each other. Why don’t they pass some laws against that? There’s plenty of grass for them to eat. They don’t need to eat each other in such vicious fashion. Someone needs to put a stop to their struggling and suffering. PETA just isn’t doing enough about these vicious animals.

    1. I have a metaphysical theory that postulates: if humans stop eating and exploiting animals entirely, perhaps God will show its face and reveal its truth to humankind. It’s based on paradoxical zen thinking. My other theory is if we blow up the world using nuclear technology, we can force the hand of god to reveal itself (if it is present). If nothing then at least we destroyed all consciousness and returned life to oblivion the Void.

      1. If people stopped eating animals they would over populate and over run the world, you think there is a lot of deer versus car accidents now just wait. Forget trying to grow a garden.

  4. For a good laugh, Google Baxter Black, A Vegetarian’s Nightmare on You Tube. Great poem with a lot of emotion on it. LOL.

  5. I have to admit I’ve always wondered if fish suffer when they’re hooked and when they die. I’ve read things about fish not having the same pain nerves that mammals do, but is that true? I’m against any kind of pain & suffering. But then look at what animals do to each other as a natural part of life. Guess it’s just a cruel world.

    1. I share similar views. I see death happening in nature moment by moment. The cycle of life is non-individualistic. Even if humans were to “hands-off” animals, they would overrun each other according to opportunity, which ebbs and flows based on atmospheric weather conditions and insect populations. I’m convinced Buddha is correct–being born into this world is not good, no matter what body you occupy.

      1. @Philly-If you ever get this figured out please let me know. Animals and People have been killing eachother for as long as they have been on this world. Most animals only kill for food (cats are an exception to this” they kill everything they can reach. But, I do agree that animals have feelings too. Only people kill for reasons other than food. More people killed over religion than any other single thing. The next would probably be power.
