Mason City police apprehended an alleged fleeing drunk driver, Robert Troy Knutson of Clear Lake, Sunday morning.

MASON CITY – An allegedly intoxicated Clear Lake man led Mason City police on a chase through the City Sunday morning.

Police attempted to stop Robert Troy Knutson, 48, just before 2 AM at the 000 block of South Washington Ave. for suspicion of drunk driving.

Knutson refused to stop and fled south on Washington Ave. then turned west on to Highway 122 in the eastbound traffic lanes and shut off his headlights, police said Sunday.  Due to the extreme danger of the pursuit, officers discontinued the chase of Knutson.

Soon after, police spotted the vehicle parked in the area of 7th Street and South Adams.  When an officer approached, Knutson drove off again still without headlights traveling the wrong way on the highway.  Again officers did not pursue.

About an hour later, an officer checking the area located the fleeing driver and his vehicle in a parking lot at 4th and South Pierce.

Knutson was arrested and charged with felony eluding and OWI second offense.
