MASON CITY – According to witnesses, a man was severely beaten early Saturday morning on Mason City’s north end.
Mason City police and emergency responders were called to the corner of North Federal Avenue and 12th Street after a man smoking a cigarette at that location had words with a group of men, what was said to be two men on bikes and others in a white or silver Cadillac.
According to a bystander, soon thereafter, more men showed up after “someone mentioned calling for back up, more blacks showed up, (the man with the cigarette) was then allegedly knocked to ground and repeatedly kicked in his head, aka melon, by a group of assailants. He looked pretty bad. He was conscious the whole time I was there, but started vomiting and continued bleeding. EMTs were strongly urging him to go to hospital, but he kept refusing. Also refused to press charges.”

The people of MC need to get together for once if they want to do something about the trash in the city be it white, black, mexican whatever. Get a few hundred citizens and go to the council meeting and demand they send or hire more housing inspectors to inspect the rentals in this town and FORCE the slumlords to bring the properties up to code or be heavily fined. They would eventually get sick of fixing the rental time and time again or they would raise the rent and that would drive at least a few out. Its a start and legal.
That is a good idea, but when building inspectors let landlords get away with gross violations, the laws would have no teeth to it.

Racism, is treating people differently because of the color of their skin, or religion, or nationality. No matter where it comes from. Our laws say all men are created equally, and must be treated as such.
So when I hear that someone makes a blanket statement about blacks (meaning all of them unless they qualify it), it concerns me. It means they look at the color of the skin, and not their character. There is nothing wrong about looking a person based upon their behavior (actions, not words), and proclaim that they are anti-social. But thus far in some comments here, that is exactly what has been happening.
Remember, it is our Constitution that makes us all equal. We must forget about stereotypes, and so forth, and aim towards equality in all facets of our country. That means no special treatment, no favors, a level playing field. But let’s quit perpetuating things that do nothing but divide our society.

What exactly should the police do? For example, how can the police know when someone is taking shots with a gun down their street unless they hear the shots themselves, or someone calls Dispatch? I assume you are saying looking for people with outstanding warrants against them. Even if that were so, how much time left in their shift would the have to do the other parts of their jobs? And what about those people who have no records, yet perpetrate crimes? How would they find them? How would they even know? And what about Due Process of Law? Throw that out with the rest of the Constitution?
The other day, some chap was walking down Federal pointing a shotgun at people and threatening them. When officers got the call, four responded, and spent the rest of their shift sorting it out after the found the perp. Luckily, they called the officers from the next shift in early, otherwise, calls would have been left unanswered for hours.
And for officers who you say have no ‘guts’ they took the risks to find that perp, who had a shotgun, and arrest him, and secure the weapon. No guts? Perhaps it is you that could not do their job. Perhaps it is you who would not know the first darned thing about flushing him out of a house without a shot fired, and no innocent bystanders hurt.
Or what about the time they ran into ice cold water in the Winnebago to rescue and save the lives of those boys who’s car flipped over. No guts eh? Or those officers who ran into a burning building to save the lives of it’s occupants? No guts? Yet according to you, they don’t care about the residents of Mason City?
I can understand legitimate concerns about specific incidents. But silly comments that have no basis? Such comments have no place in a conversation about community safety.

My hope is that the police are doing something about this influx of problems. They could bust someone the first time they find them selling or using drugs and charge them with a state code violation and the CA would plead it down to time served and pay court cost or they can build a stronger and more complex case and charge them in the Federal system showing an ongoing criminal enterprise. Sure there has always been crime, but we did not have the constant barrage of shootings,murders, knifings, assaults- domestic or otherwise. It’s all about supply and demand. If we did not have the demand for drugs here, the people from out of town, would not set up shop here and wreak havoc on our community. So, it goes both ways. I for one will be contacting our governor, the attorney general’s office and whoever else it takes to investigate our community and the county attorneys and the police force and see why the police aren’t doing their jobs to protect the citizens. We have a girl that’s been raped and the rapist is walking the streets, we have a man who shot a gun into a car of people walking the streets, and the crime in this community is out of control and the police don’t seem to be doing anything to make this a safe community. Lived on north end 18 yrs now, definitely seen a change in police tactics, friend told me who has a connection to PD by relative tells me the officers want to do more but management afraid of lawsuits since. They’ve had so many lately, worry about consequences from the bosses losing jobs or being suspended cause some one complains the cops were not nice enough!! I am also told only 4 -5 cops on duty at one time WTF 30,000 people 5 cops??? Then attorneys let em go anyway??? Easy to blame pd and attorneys, but people who live here bring these clowns to town and support them by buying the drugs and letting them live with them and have their babies, etc etc etc. Time to relocate maybe

The Mason City Police Department cannot concern itself with stupid insignificant crimes such as assault, murder, rape, arson, drugs related crimes etc because they’re too busy handing out tickets for people not wearing their seat belts! Obviously the police are not doing their jobs! The victim was vomiting which means he obviously had a brain injury. That state takes away his ability to be reasonable and make sound decisions. The police walk away from this one saying he did not want to press charges. By the sound if his condition, he was not of sound mind to decide that. His state of mind was altered. If someone is drunk, they cannot legally consent to sex so if someone has a brain injury, how can that person be allowed to make that legal decisions? I sure hope the police follow up with the victim when he is doing better and that once he comes around, he chooses to do the right thing and press charges.
Along with that goes the fire dept. for not taking him anyway when they know he was in no way able to make sound decisions. Those are classic signs of brain trauma. If the guy is found dead from a brain bleed later who will be responsible for that.

Good white tee’s are easier to aim for in the dark. Don’t have to wait for the light to catch the teeth and eyeballs. You sure these white tee’s are not taking up the 1st row of the Island waiting for the mudsharks to come to shore.
I sure it has to do with someone that lives near there (monroe park) and the drug dealings that go on in them parts
Jenna is right. She is my neighbor and we see this go down all the time and it is getting worse, the punks in there white t-shirts. I can even show ya how to do there little hand shake they all do, I see so much. They act like they can do what ever they want when ever they want. They should know that in today’s world there are cameras every where and mostly in places that would never expect them to be. Keeping an eye on things doesn’t always mean a cop car driving around the neighborhood.
