NIACC women fall to Kirkwood, 68-59

CEDAR RAPIDS – The No. 7 NIACC women’s basketball team dropped a 68-59 decision to No. 2 Kirkwood in an ICCAC contest Wednesday night.

Kirkwood (16-3 overall, 2-0 in the ICCAC) led 36-31 at the half and 52-44 after the third quarter.

NIACC (14-4, 1-1) was led by freshman Cici Kieger with 16 points, including four 3-point goals. Freshman Mikayla Homola was next in line with 12 points and sophomores Taylor Laabs and UU Longs both scored 10 points.

Also for the Lady Trojans, sophomore Khalilah Holloway grabbed 16 rebounds, which matches her season and career high. It is the fourth time this season that Holloway has grabbed double digit rebounds.

Laabs had five assists.

Kirkwood was led by Tayana Wilson with 16 points. Olivia Usher and Arika Wooldridge both scored nine points for the Eagles.

In between Wednesday’s women’s and men’s game, Kirkwood men’s assistant basketball coach Ben Jacobson was honored. The coach was diagnosed with brain cancer in November of 2017.

The NIACC men’s and women’s teams recently held a skills clinic to help raise money for the Jacobson family. NIACC women’s coach Todd Ciochetto presented Jacobson with a check for $1900 during the ceremony.

The NIACC women return to action Saturday at home against Iowa Central. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in the NIACC gym.

The Lady Trojans get their rematch with the rival Eagles on Feb. 14 in Mason City.
