MASON CITY – After nearly 36 years in policing, which includes almost 9 years with the City of Mason City, Police Chief Mike Lashbrook has announced his retirement.

Chief Lashbrook joined the City of Mason City Police Department as Chief in January of 2007. He previously served in the Police Departments in the communities of Nashua, Cedar Falls and Spencer before returning ‘home’ to Mason City.

Police Chief Mike Lashbrook stated, “I consider myself privileged, and fortunate to have enjoyed a career that has provided me with many opportunities and challenges. I reflect upon this time with humility and appreciation for so many who have given me support, guidance and the benefit of their experiences, and I hope that in some way I have not only been able to return the same, but pay it forward. Personally, being a police officer wasn’t about a vocation but a calling; a passion for public service and a commitment to the public’s trust. I chose to ‘experience’ being a police officer not just be one, and it was with this drive that I proudly served in the communities of Nashua, Cedar Falls, Spencer and finally, my home, Mason City. To give, or be, anything less would be a disservice to a profession that has given and done so much for me and my family, and ultimately has led to my decision to retire.”

Chief Lashbrook also thanked City staff, the Mayor and City Council, citizens and most importantly the men and women of the Mason City Police Department for ‘the trust and faith shown to me as your Chief of Police’.

City Administrator Brent Trout stated, “The professional manner that Chief Lashbrook has carried out his duties is evident in all the department does. The department organizational changes he has made has streamlined the department and created a more targeted effort to fight crime and make our community safer.”

Mayor Eric Bookmeyer commented, “Everyone who has worked with Chief from citizens to staff, or council, has been honored to do so. He is a talented public servant and he has had an outstanding career. Mason City has been honored to have a Chief of this caliber for the last 9 years.”

The hiring process for a replacement will begin in the next few weeks with the selection of the new Police Chief anticipated with City Council approval in early December 2015.

Chief Lashbrook’s retirement is effective December 31, 2015.

Will skipper or Matt take the job ?

nothing fishy. chief signed up for what is called PRIDE in the retirement system. you can retire at 55 but If u sign up for max of 5 more years a annuity is formed. catch is you have to give a exact date of retirement. so from what I heard lashbrooke signed up for 3 yrs. giving 12/31/2015 as a retirement date, so he has no say so its the retirement board.

Good luck in retirement chief, I can see that stress has taken it’s toll.

I smell something fishy and I bet it starts at city hall.
