Des Moines, IOWA — Trooper Steven Lawrence contacted the Hamilton County Clerk of Court’s Office yesterday, July 29, 2013, and asked that funds previously provided for the payment of his recent speeding ticket be reversed.
Trooper Steve Lawrence was cited for speeding in Hamilton County on April 26, 2013, 84 m.p.h. in a 65 m.p.h. zone. The citation was issued on Thursday, July 25, 2013.
According to the Des Moines Register, “Fired Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation supervisor Larry Hedlund confirmed to the Register on Saturday that he paid Lawrence’s ticket because ‘it was the right thing to do. I know he was behind the wheel, but this was never about getting him in trouble. It was about the public safety issue.'”
Trooper Lawrence told his supervisors, “This speeding ticket is my responsibility and I will take responsibility for my own actions.
“As a citizen and motorist, I want to access the court system and exercise my rights to due process. When the ticket was paid without my knowledge, those choices and rights were taken away.”
