Elderly Northern Iowa man dead in ATV crash

An elderly Northern Iowa man crashed his Arctic Cat ATV into a ditch, and tragically succumbed to his injuries.

SUMNER, IOWA – An elderly Northern Iowa man crashed his Arctic Cat ATV into a ditch, and tragically succumbed to his injuries.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, an ATV crash took place on November 21, 2025, in Fayette county, near Sumner, Iowa. At 4:11 PM that afternoon, near 19186 160th Street outside Sumner, Iowa, a 2005 Arctic Cat 4-wheeler driven by 84-year-old Veryl Alfred Burghardt of Fayette, Iowa, entered a ditch and crashed.

As a result of the crash, Burghardt was fatally injured and taken to a nearby hospital, where he soon passed away. According to an obituary, Veryl served in the United States Navy from 1959 until being honorably discharged in 1963, then returned home to the family farm.
