IOWA CITY – The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a fire at a University of Iowa residence hall on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, and students were forced to flee from the blaze.

Crews were dispatched to Daum Residence Hall, 225 N. Clinton St., for a fire alarm at 3:30 a.m. Responding firefighters discovered a small fire in an unoccupied dorm room being held under control by the building’s sprinkler system. Firefighters extinguished the fire.

Fire damage was contained to the room of origin; however, water damage occurred on the first and second floors of the residence hall. Most students had evacuated the building prior to the fire department’s arrival. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.

Students displaced by the fire were relocated to other rooms or buildings by University of Iowa staff. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s Office and the University of Iowa’s Fire Marshal.

The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted by the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, University of Iowa Police, University of Iowa Facilities, and the Johnson County Ambulance Service.
