September 16, 1942 – September 1, 2025

Elaine R. Berding, 82, of Mason City, IA passed away peacefully, Monday September 1, 2025 surrounded by those she loved.

She will be laid to rest at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Elaine was born September 16, 1942, in Mason City, the daughter of Phillip Ambrose and Lucille Marie (Koshkatka) Barloon. She grew up in a lively household with her six siblings and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in 1961. That same year, she married the love of her life and best friend, Larry Ben Berding, at Holy Family Catholic Church, and together they welcomed two children, Larry Jr. and Linda.

Elaine worked here and there over the years—most often lending a hand at the family restaurant—but her true talents were found at home. She was a wonderful cook and an even better baker. Her cookies never lasted long, and her apple pie, cream cake, and infamous “better than sex” cake were enough to make any gathering sweeter.

She and Larry Sr. were inseparable. They shared a love of travel, and together they explored the world one winter trip at a time. After his passing in 2000, Elaine found companionship with Don Willier, and the two continued her tradition of enjoying life through trips to the casino and simple pleasures. Breakfast was their favorite outing, whether at LD’s, Cook’s Café, or Village Court, and Saturday mornings weren’t complete without a Long John donut and coffee with her sister and friends.

Known for her sharp wit and playful sarcasm, Elaine had a knack for keeping people on their toes. Whether it was a perfectly timed one-liner or a pet nickname for someone she loved, she never missed the chance to make life a little more fun. She adored her cat, Beaner, often signing cards as “Elaine and Beaner,” as if the two were a package deal.

Above all, Elaine was happiest when surrounded by family. Nothing brought her more joy than being “Grandma” to her grandsons, Andrew and Mitchell, whom she adored and proudly spoiled.

Elaine’s legacy is one of laughter, love, and a touch of spice—just enough to keep life interesting.

She is survived by her son, Larry Berding of Mason City; son-in-law, Steve (Kim) Inman of Mason City; grandsons, Andrew and Mitchell (Courtney) Inman; sister, Lillian Yegge of Ankeny; companion, Don Willier; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends made along the way.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Larry Sr.; daughter, Linda Inman; her beloved kitty, Beaner; her parents; siblings, Sister Dorothy Ann Barloon, Madonna Bunker, Mary Barloon, Charles “Chuck” Barloon, and Phyllis Edgar.
