MASON CITY – This Mason City woman is no stranger to the court system and local jail cells, and now she will have 7 days behind bars to decide if she will menace the community with further dangerous actions.

Rachel Marie Butner, age 33, was booked into the Cerro Gordo county jail at the classy hour of 2:51 AM back on February 28, 2025. She had been stopped and arrested by the Iowa State Patrol on a charge of second-offense operating while intoxicated. According to the Iowa breath alcohol test result website, at 2:51 AM that day in Cerro Gordo county, one test was applied to a female suspect by an Iowa State Patrol trooper, and the result was 0.110 and 0.109 – well above the legal limit of 0.08. Butner was also accused of speeding at 11 to 15 mile per hour over the posted speed limit.

After an initial plea of not guilty, Butner entered a guilty plea to the charge of second-offense operating while intoxicated (the speeding charge was dropped), and was sentenced on July 1 to 7 days in jail and ordered to pay Iowa courts $2,256.25.

Butner was booked into the Cerro Gordo county jail at the classy time of 1:16 AM on July 21 to begin serving her sentence.

Iowa courts helped enable Butner’s reckless behavior by imposing a deferred judgement on an earlier drunk driving arrest in August of 2020. She was accused of speeding at over 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit as she drove drunk through the community and could not provide proof of insurance – but those charges were dropped. She was placed on probation for the incident. However, she violated her probation that December, and she was sent to jail for 2 days and ordered to pay Iowa courts $1,875.10, as she failed to meet a court-ordered payment plan of $100.00 per month – even though her wages were garnished.
