SWEA CITY, IOWA – Police investigated a domestic incident in this remote Northern Iowa town, leading to the arrest of a suspect on felony charges.

The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating an incident that was reported at 5:45 AM on February 20, 2025. This was a report of an individual that was involved in a disturbance that had occurred in the earlier morning hours in the 100 block of 2nd Avenue West in Swea City, Iowa.

The report involved an intoxicated individual possibly in possession of a firearm.

The sheriff’s office responded and identified the person involved to be 38-year-old Michael Hammond, of 106 2nd Avenue West in Swea City. Hammond was located at his residence when officers arrived, but he did not cooperate with providing information on the disturbance. The case then went under investigation.

After gathering more information and evidence that a firearm had been discharged during the February 20th incident, deputies executed a valid search warrant on February 24, 2025 at 106 2nd Avenue West in Swea City. An arrest warrant for Michael Hammond had also been obtained, after information was reported of a domestic disturbance that occurred during the February 20th incident.

Michael Hammond was arrested and transported to the Kossuth County Jail on the following charges:

• Going Armed with Intent Class D Felony

• Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon Class D Felony

• Domestic Assault while displaying a weapon Aggravated Misd.

• Domestic Assault, 2nd Offense Aggravated Misd.

A no-contact order was issued for protection of the victim in this matter. Hammond now awaits a preliminary hearing set for March 7 at 2:00 PM.
