Police in Iowa City say a tragedy was averted when a bystander grabbed a loaded handgun from a small child walking on a sidewalk. They say the incident went down on the evening of June 14, 2024. The three-year-old son of 31-year-old Samantha Marie Hall of Iowa City was seen walking down the sidewalk carrying a handgun with full magazine. A passerby took the handgun away from the child. Hall grabbed her child and brought him back to her home residence. Officers located Hall and the child at her residence. Hall said that she was cleaning the house and did not realize that the child had walked away from the residence. She admitted to having a handgun that she keeps on her night stand and was unaware that the child walked out of the residence with the firearm.

Hall was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

– CHILD ENDANGERMENT, AN AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOR

– MAKING FIREARMS AVAILABLE TO MINOR, A SERIOUS MISDEMEANOR

Hall posted a $3,000 bond, while a judge imposed a no-contact order upon her. There will be a hearing on the matter on June 26.
