College Basketball: Iowa opens season with Monday night home exhibition versus Quincy

IOWA CITY - The University of Iowa men’s basketball team will host Quincy in an exhibition game on Monday on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game will tipoff at 7 p.m. (CT) and be streamed live on B1G+.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Univer- sity of Iowa students can get in free (with a student ID).

Radio: Games are broadcast on the Hawkeye Radio Network with Gary Dolphin (play-by-play) and Bobby Hansen (color) on the call. The network includes more than 40 stations that blanket the state of Iowa and include portions of Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. The Hawkeye Radio Network includes a 60-minute pregame show.
Stream: Monday’s game will be streamed live on B1G+ — a paid subscription service. John Leo (play-by-play) and Vivian Sumoski (color) will be on the call.

SCOUTING QUINCY
• Steve Hawkins returns to Quincy after serving as the head coach at Central Michigan for 17 seasons from 2003-20. It is Hawkins’ second stint at Quincy as he served as head coach from 1991-2000.
• The Hawks, an NCAA Division II institution that competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, return two starters and nine total players from a team that posted a 14-15 overall record during the 2022-23 season. Quincy has five newcomers, including two junior college transfers.
• Zion Richardson is Quincy’s top returning scorer, averaging 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

McCAFFERY APPROACHES RECORD
• Head coach Fran McCaffery, who is entering his 28th season as a head coach and 14th at Iowa, needs 11 victories to becoming the winningest coach in program history. (Tom Davis has 271 victories.)
• With his next Big Ten Conference win, McCaffery will also pass Davis for the most Big Ten victories in program history.

The Hawkeyes return three Ps — Patrick, Payton and Perkins — in 2023-24. The trio have combined to start 100 games in their collegiate career and appear in 251 career games.

• Fifth-year senior Patrick McCaffery has averaged 10.5 and 9.8 points in his last two seasons. For his career, the Iowa City, Iowa, native shoots 41.9 percent from the field, averaging 8.4 points in 92 career games.

• Junior Payton Sandfort is slated for a big jump in 2023-24 after being the 2023 Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year. The Waukee, Iowa, native averaged 10.3 points, making 59 3-pointers a season ago — sec- ond-most on the team. Sandfort is ranked as the No. 89 player nationally by THE ALMANAC.

• Senior Tony Perkins has a team-high 47 career
starts as a Hawkeye and he’s the team’s leading returning scorer after averaging 12.3 points per game in 2022-23. The Indianapolis native is a preseason second-team All-Big Ten selection by THE ALMANAC.
