MASON CITY – Mason City Council member Tom Thoma passed away earlier today, city hall said in a statement this evening.
Below is a statement from Mayor Schickel:
“Mason City lost a friend, journalist, and public servant today. May Councilman Tom Thoma (his photo is above) rest in peace. Candi and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and many friends. A colleague today put it best when she described him as a beautiful person with a heart of gold.
“Councilman Thoma was first elected in 2017 and reelected in 2021. He had been hospitalized for several weeks and more recently took a turn for the worse.”
Arrangements are pending at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

i met tom back in 1974 when he was the police reporter gor the GG. you could tell tom anything and tell him not to release until he was told he could, and thats the way he handled it. he would wait, not like todays reporters who would break there neck trying to get back and get the info out. RIP Tom, to a very nice guy and friend
