MASON CITY – Law enforcement and others banded together Thursday afternoon when a special needs child went missing.
Police received a call Thursday around 5:45 PM from a mother who could not locate her 10-year-old autistic daughter. The girl was said to have been missing since about 4:45, but after an hour of searching, the girl could not be found.
Mason City police, Cerro Gordo deputies and Iowa State Patrol as well as others converged on an area near South Kentucky Avenue and 10th Street, near railroad tracks. The child was said to be autistic and fascinated with trains.
The railroad was notified and given the information, and one train conductor stopped his train so that police could search for the girl.
Shortly before 7:00 pm, it was reported that the girl was found, playing with a neighbor girl.
