Students Selected to Statewide Honors Orchestra

MASON CITY – Three Mason City Community School District students were selected to perform in the statewide honor orchestra at the ISTA (Iowa Strings Teacher Association) Spring Conference scheduled for Saturday May 14th at UNI.

Students Halle Phillips (John Adams Middle School – 8th grade), Emily Meierotto (John Adams Middle School – 8th grade), and Maddie Kim (Mason City High School – 9th grade) were selected based on auditions held at the Northeast Iowa String Teachers Honor Orchestra held in Cedar Rapids in January.

Lauren Bell, 7-12 Orchestra Director shared, “These students are some of the top in the state at their grade level.”
“Mason City Community School District is proud to be able to offer an orchestra program that creates these opportunities for our students,” stated Superintendent Anita Micich.

The ISTA Spring Conference is a one day event that has a middle school and a high school honor orchestra selected from the regional orchestras that took place in January. They rehearse throughout the day and perform at an evening concert with another featured ensemble. The High School Honor group will be directed by Carey Bostian, and the Middle School Honor Group will be directed by Ted Hallberg.

In other instrumental strings news for the district, staff members Lauren Bell and Bart Meinke will perform solos at the North Iowa Symphony concert to be held on April 14.
