IOWA CITY – This hapless Iowa bank robber travelled over 50 miles from his home town to rob possibly his third bank, and after he actually fled with over $14,000 in cash, was nabbed a few hours later and now his life is in shambles again.

At 10:19 AM on Friday, January 9, 2026, the Iowa City Police Department responded to Hills Bank, 2621 Muscatine Avenue, for a report of a bank robbery. The suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police say that a suspect walked into Hills Bank and Trust, with a face covering, gloves, and a bag. The defendant walked up to the teller, and demanded they empty the cash drawer, and put the large bills on the counter. The defendant then went to a secondary teller and demanded they empty their drawer. The defendant also grabbed a customer’s cash on the counter. The defendant left the bank with $14,676 in various denominations.

The very next day, police offered an update on the caper. Based on the investigation into the Friday morning bank robbery at Hills Bank, Iowa City police have arrested 42-year-old Antoinne E. Davis of Davenport, Iowa.

Davis (pictured at top, left, allegedly in action, and at right in jail photo) faces one count of Second-Degree Robbery.

Search warrants were conducted on the Davis’ person and residence. A large sum of U.S. currency was recovered in the defendants possession, as well as clothing worn during the robbery. The defendant admitted under Miranda in an interview to robbing the bank for financial gain to repay a debt.

Police also said Davis has two previous federal robbery convictions including 306CR00503 (18USC2113a) Bank Robbery (sentencing date 08/22/2006) and 314CR0058 (18USC2113a) Bank Robbery (sentencing date 06/18/2015). Davis is currently on federal probation for Bank Robbery.

The Iowa City Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, University of Iowa Police Department, the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, and the Johnson County Attorney’s Office.

Police offered no further information on the incident.
