Vonna was born on June 26th, 1935 and passed away on November 23rd, 2025 at the age of 90

Vonna R. Schmitz, 90, of Oelwein, Iowa, died peacefully on Sunday morning, November 23, 2025, at MercyOne in Waterloo.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Transco Events on Frederick, Oelwein, Iowa with Pastor Steve Berkeland officiating.
Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein and for one hour before the service on Wednesday at Transco Events on Frederick.
Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein, Iowa.
Memorials will be designated to charities by the family at a later date.

Vonna Ruth Streeter was born June 26, 1935, on a farm near Aurora in rural Buchanan County, Iowa the daughter of Norman Louis & Altha Belle (Reed) Streeter. She graduated from West Central High School, Maynard, in the class of 1953. She attended Upper Iowa College in Fayette where she received her teaching certificate in 1956. Vonna taught at the Stanley School in Stanley from 1956 to 1958. Vonna was united in marriage to Wayne Robert Taylor on May 25, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Vonna stopped teaching after the birth of her daughter, Deb. Vonna was then a homemaker until she went back to teaching at Harlan School in Oelwein for many years. She stopped teaching to take care of her husband, Wayne. During this time, Vonna and Wayne opened Taylor’s Glass and Gifts in downtown Oelwein. Wayne died on March 26, 1985. After closing the gift shop, Vonna started a daycare in her home for eleven years until 1994. During those eleven years, she enjoyed each child that she cared for! On August 5, 1995, Vonna married Leo Clem Schmitz at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. They resided together in West Union until Leo’s death on January 31, 2006. Vonna continued to live in West Union until January of 2018, when she moved back to Oelwein to be closer to her daughter.

Vonna was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and attended Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union with Leo. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, and watching the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Hallmark movies. She experienced the most joy when she received visits from her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great great grandson.

Vonna is survived by her Daughter: Deb (Scott) Howard of Hazleton; 5 Grandchildren: Alisha (Josh) Evans of Jesup, Ryan Meier (Stephanie Pauley) of New Hampton, Brody (Melissa) Meier of Holmen, Wisconsin, Kari (Ryan) McDowell of Palo and Bryan (Alexa) Howard of Central City; 18 Great Grandchildren: Nolan, Natalie, Nash and Neah Evans of Jesup; Chase & Brock Meier and Ricky, AnnaRose & Abram Pauley of New Hampton; Taylor & Lincoln Meier of Holmen, Wisconsin; Mason, Madden & Macoy McDowell of Palo; Caiden & Christian Howard and Hadleigh & Brennan Gentz of Central City; 1 Great Great Grandson: Myles Lange-Evans of Jesup; Sister: Velda Griffin of Manchester and Many Nieces, Nephews and the Leo Schmitz family.

Vonna was preceded in death by her parents, 2 husbands, sister as a child: Vivian Streeter and a brother-in-law: Galen Griffin.
