WEST UNION, IOWA – Law enforcement in the Northern Iowa area are reporting that a check-altering fraud case connected to check amounts being altered after being intercepted at post offices are costing local residents big time.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office alerted the public of several reports in the area of check fraud cases that were mailed to Discover Credit Card.  Through their investigation, it was determined that the checks were being intercepted through the Post Office, not in this area. The checks are then being altered and addressed to different people and for greater amounts. So far, in Fayette County, there have been many victims with losses in the tens of thousands of dollars. Local banks are also on the lookout and doing their due diligence in catching the altered checks.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has been working with the Post Office Inspector.

If you believe you are a victim of such crime, please report this to your local police.
