CLEAR LAKE – A male defendant suspected by Clear Lake police of frauding an elderly citizen was hunted down in Illinois and is now enjoying the confines of the Cerro Gordo county jail.

Shoaib Mohammed Ahmed, age 26, was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail at 5:49 PM on September 11, 2025, on a charge of felony B first-degree theft against an older individual, a violation of Iowa code 714.2A(1)(a). This code is titled “theft against an older individual – misappropriate property $10,000+.” Iowa code says an “older individual” means an individual who is sixty years of age or older.

Clear Lake police say the crime took place on May 30, 2025, and later, an elderly citizen made a report to them. This led to the charge being brought against Ahmed on August 22, 2025, and a judge issuing an arrest warrant on August 25. After Ahmed was nabbed in Douglass county, Illinois, the warrant was served by Cerro Gordo deputies on September 11, and he was jailed on $25,000 cash-only bond.

Reportedly, Ahmed tricked the Clear Lake citizen into transferring ownership of over $200,000 worth of gold bars.
