Taylor Moen selected as NIACC women’s basketball assistant coach

MASON CITY - Former Waldorf University point guard Taylor Moen will be an assistant coach for the NIACC women's basketball team in the 2024-25 season.

MASON CITY – Former Waldorf University point guard Taylor Moen will be an assistant coach for the NIACC women’s basketball team in the 2024-25 season.

Moen was a three-year starter at point guard at Waldorf University from 2020-23. She received her BA in sports management with a business minor from Waldorf in 2023.

Moen will assist fourth-year head coach Brad Vaught and replaces former assistant coach Mark Mohl, who stepped down after the 2023-24 season.

“I have always known that I would coach basketball once my playing career came to an end,” Moen said. “I was in the North Iowa area when I was at Waldorf and like the area.

“I am very grateful to have this opportunity and I am excited that I have the chance to impact the game from the sidelines as an assistant.”

Moen, who was an all-conference performer at Big Lake High School, said her time as a collegiate point guard will help her in her new role as assistant coach.

“As a point guard during my collegiate career it helped my perspective grow,” she said. “I learned how to lead, communicate and make quick decisions under pressure. These skills translate into coaching where I can use my experience to guide and motivate players.”

After Waldorf, Moen transferred to Culver-Stockon College to play basketball but a concussion prevented her from playing her final season.

Moen is currently taking classes at Culver-Stockton College for her MBA in business management with an expected completion in May of 2025.

Moen is in her second season as an assistant coach and office administrator with the Minnesota Suns. Moen assists with the 2028 Rising BlueStar and 2028 Black girls’ teams.

“I have been given a lot of opportunities with the Minnesota Suns,” Moen said. “I have been an assistant coach for two 2028 girls teams the past two years.

“Along with coaching these teams I also coach at the skill sessions. I enjoy helping each athlete develop and grow as players. I am also in my second year of working in an administration assistant role for the club.”
Moen said she’s excited to get started.

“I will bring my dedicated work ethic and strong understanding of the game to support Coach Vaught and the NIACC players,” she said. “I have a passion for basketball and an enthusiasm for helping players reach their full potential.”
