Becky Johnston, 99, of Northwood passed away peacefully Sunday, May 26, 2024 at the Lutheran Retirement Home.

Funeral services will be held 11:00am Monday, June 3, 2024 at the Northwood United Methodist Church, 1000 1st Ave N, Northwood, IA with Rev. Rob Lanphere officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Alice Elizabeth “Becky” Heiny was born on March 1, 1925, in Albert Lea, MN, to Dr. Claude R. and Florence E. (Weidenhamer) Heiny. Shortly after, the family moved to Northwood, where Becky would make her home for nearly her entire life. A proud member of the Northwood High School Class of 1942, she furthered her education at the University of Iowa. Becky dedicated 41 years to the Worth County Recorder’s Office, serving as the County Recorder for 12 of those years. Remarkably, she was able to spend 95 of her 99 years in the cherished family home in Northwood.

A devoted member of the Northwood United Methodist Church, Becky was also active in the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter ES, and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Becky was known for her daily walks around Northwood, faithfully clocking in three miles each day. She was an avid reader and knitter, creating beautiful pieces to share with those she loved. An enthusiastic follower of college sports, she particularly enjoyed keeping track of Iowa and Iowa State games through her trusty radio. Becky had a passion for travel. Her gentle spirit extended to both people and animals, and found joy in the simple pleasures of watching the birds and squirrels at her feeders.

Becky’s kindness and love touched many lives, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Catherine “Cathy” Johnston of Jordan, MN; grandchildren, Rabekah (Todd) Simmons of Dayton, MN, Emily (Charlie) Johnston and Spencer Johnston, all of Jordan, MN; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Maxwell, Zoe, Riley and Chayton; niece and nephews, Mark Heiny, Claude Heiny, Janine Rayburn and Dan Heiny; as well as great-nieces, nephews and many extended family members.

Preceding her in death are her son, Stephen; parents; and brother, William (Irene) Heiny.
