Suspect arrested after bringing gun to an Iowa school and making threats to teachers

IOWA CITY - A man allegedly brought a gun to this Iowa elementary school and threatened teachers, paralyzing the campus while cops dealt with the situation.

IOWA CITY – A man allegedly brought a gun to this Iowa elementary school and threatened teachers, paralyzing the campus while cops dealt with the situation.

Police in Iowa City report that at 9:01 AM, Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, Iowa City Police were called to Grant Wood Elementary School, 1930 Lakeside Drive, for an incident in which an armed parent threatened multiple staff members. Officers arrived on scene and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

The school district told parents in electronic communications, “This morning, a parent in the main office of the school began to threaten multiple staff members. The man had a handgun on his hip and proceeded to hand the gun to another individual who he asked to take the weapon outside. The other individual took the weapon and left the building.”

Classrooms were locked as the incident unfolded.

As a result of an investigation into the incident, the suspect, Brandon J. Jones (pictured at top), age 31 of Iowa City, was arrested and faces the following charges:

– Carrying Weapons on School Grounds – Iowa code 724.4B states, “A person who goes armed with, carries, or transports a firearm of any kind, whether concealed or not, on the grounds of a school commits a class “D” felony.”

– Two counts of First-degree Harassment (First Count), an aggravated misdemeanor.

The Iowa City Community School District put counselors at the school for staff members or students who wish to speak with someone about this incident.
