Mason City pool will stay looking like this until at least 2021

MASON CITY – Mason City announced today that the City will not open its public pool this summer due to COVID-19

“The City of Mason City continues to prioritize the health and wellness of our community through this pandemic,” City Administrator Aaron Burnett said in a statement released Wednesday. “Due to the many challenges and uncertainties presented by COVID-19 and its impacts on summer aquatic programs in our community, the Mason City Park Board, in consultation with city staff, has decided to not prepare the pools to open to the public this summer. The level of public congregation that takes place at aquatic facilities and the demand for properly trained and certified staff required to operate these facilities makes it impossible to safely open at this time. Elected officials and staff will continuously monitor the situation and, if the current public health emergency conditions impacting the safety of pool operations dramatically change, opening of pools will be considered at a future date.”

  1. Interesting that this decision was reached by consulting between city staff and the park board. Not one single medical professional was consulted???? There are much more adverse health consequences to socially isolating and encouraging a sedentary life style than living in fear of a virus with a 0.2% fatality rate.

    1. So the .2% is slightly higher than the annual Flu rate ..right ? I just don’t recall NY throwing bodies in refrigerated trailers last Flu season . I bet it did happen though just that the Democratic press chose not to cover it .

  2. Pool is nothing but a cess pool anyway. Shut down half the time for cleaning because kids pee in it.

  3. Save money! Slash that budget. Revenue is where. Gone. The feds will give cities and states money, have to. More stimulus for the people’s coronie checks is a must too. A safer at home summer lies ahead.

  4. You all yelling for it to open would be the first ones suing the city when your kid gets CV19 or your grandma or yourself.

    1. People should run and hide in their cellars…since Cancer is on the loose. What a joke. Non Christians terrified to die. So hideeeeeeeeee.

      1. had it and healed. But lets shut down our lives due the the democratic media preaching the gloom and doom. I actually witnessed two old men smoking and bitching about covid…yep right.

OPEN it, id you don’t want to go DON’T.
Clear Lake will be open, so will big blue, screw MC

        1. Bunch of snowflakes here. Can’t go to the pool. I am so oppressed and depressed. I have to watch my own kids this summer? That’s not fair. Waa waaa waa.

    1. Playgrounds are taped shut but piccleball in close groups and ball sharing is ok. Mayor will be unseated. Between Mayor and Burnett, this city remains the dumpster of Iowa.

  5. Our mayor plays piccleball in groups but the pool with chlorine can’t be open…what a joke MC

  6. This is the stupidest thing I have heard yet. Get on with life already, kids are going crazy with nothing to do. Now take away the pool, this town has nothing to do as it is now taking this away will drive them to no good things. Why cant our council open it up? If people dont want to go then stay home. We gonna leave everything closed until when? The flu is much more deadly than this and we carry on with life.
