CHICAGO, June 6 (UPI) — A federal judge in Chicago says she will not seal parts of the sentencing memorandum for former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill., until she has seen it.
The memorandum is to be filed by Friday. In her ruling Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Jackson and his lawyers can ask her again to keep parts of the papers dealing with Jackson’s medical history from public release, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The judge, who is not related to the former member of Congress, said she cannot “make a reasoned judgment about the necessity for the order” until she sees the memorandum.
Jackson — son and namesake of the civil rights leader — and his wife, former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, are scheduled to be sentenced July 1. Jackson admitted using campaign funds for personal expenses, while his wife pleaded guilty to tax evasion.
Jesse Jackson Jr. was treated for bipolar disorder last year. In the motion filed Monday, his lawyers said the sentencing memorandum would include sensitive information about his medical history and that of a relative.
