Op-ed: I love this country (by Max F. Weaver)

Max F. Weaver

It’s Tuesday, election day, around 7 PM.  No winners or losers yet.

I feel compelled to think out loud, something I haven’t done for months, really.

Let me begin with some of the reasons to hate politicians and the process.

Let’s see.  Over two years of spirited campaigning, criss-crossing the country, hundreds of times.  Endless ads and phone calls.  Twists and turns.  The party on the right is on a big push to put their god in our politics.  The party on the left is on a big push to put a check in everyone’s hand.

Of course, I have over-simplified this campaign with monster issues facing our country.

In the end, the final frenzied days of this election, we are hearing that well over $2.5 billion has been spent on truths and lies.  So bad is it that the media can’t even help us figure it out so we are left with choosing our favorite cable channel that fits our lifestyle.  How convenient.

Enough already.

What I really want to say to all the whiners who don’t approve of the process and likely do not vote is that I love this country.

Look round.  It’s really not that bad of a place to live.

I noticed on my ballot today we had 8 choices for President and the possibility of a write-in.  Something for everyone.  Even the millions who didn’t vote.

I love this country.

Or how about those loved ones who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice for the precious right to vote?  Thank you.

I love this country.

I got to vote a split ticket today.  A political buffet.  Only in America.

I love this country.

To President Obama and Governor Romney and their families, I say good luck.  You are both very qualified and represent the beliefs and the heart of your prospective parties.

I love this country.

The framers of our constitution thought they had a good idea creating America well over 200-plus years ago.  I say to them they had a great idea.

I love this country.

In closing I would like to say thank you to all the volunteers, from the door knockers to the people who donated their hard-earned fives and tens.  Not because they want something, but because they believe.

All this and not one shot fired.  Nobody died electing our President today.

I love this country.

Max Frank Weaver

Great to hear from you Max….The City needs you back in action!

Thumbs up!

Good to hear from you Max. Hope your thinking of running for office again.

Max if you run for Mayor I will pledge $100 and as much of my time as possible to make sure you are the mayor before AND after midnight!

Max, like you I love this country and I loved Mason City.

MAX! Welcome back, well I know you never really left…FYI – I wrote ya in in a spot or two on my ballot!

Max I told you before and I’ll say it again. if you run I’ll back you to the best of my abilty…….Jim

Obviously not a cop or live where crime is really happening in our fair town. restore. Like low lifes are going to get rich on what they give ’em, never.

Obviously a suit and loves politics as usual reggie. No ruffle’s here no questions there. Where’s your passion? When you are lied to consistantly as Weaver endured and he caught them time and again who cares about rules and how to let ’em know.
This mayor has never played by the rules.

Great words Max and heartfelt, the best part? You mean it. I couldn’t fathom anyone sitting at that table speaking like that. Unless of course they read yours last night and got one in to the globe today. Sort of like the “art” around town. joke.

Nice article Max. Well written. Now that you are back in the limelight what are your real intentions.Max is smart And sly like a fox. Guess we will just have to wait to see what his real agenda is.
I have known Max for years. Never underestimate Max and beware Max does have an agenda. he is just very clever like a fox. Good man though.

Max, I wish you were in charge of our hen house right now. Because there’s trouble right here in River City!!!! thanks, Max….

I love this country too. I like Max.I like this new council.I like Pres.Obama.
This council, like Pres. Obama, had a big hole to climb out of.Pres. Obama had a looming depression and 2 wars to get us out of. This council had a negative statewide perception and a budget deficit to deal with.
Did either of them do a perfect job? No but they both ,in my humble opinion, did a good job.
Max is a great guy but NOT when he is in a position of power. He doesn’t play by the rules, which I am sure that’s why some of you like him.I think his grandstanding at council meetings scare outsiders off. While I too hope Max continues to write on NIT , I
hopes he never gets elected to the council again.OK let the dog pile begin.

When I first started to read this I was getting upset. I read the part about crime being down and then I knew I had nothing to get upset about. If you think crime is down then I know you are not in your right mind so I can’t hold what you say against you.

@restore-you must live in a bubble or on Mars or something. Have you been smoking that funny stuff or are you just trying to stir up crap as I suspect.

Great to see Weaver writing again on NIT. Hope he writes more!

WEAVER! Get down to city hall NOW! Holy mack this place NEEDS and WANTS you !

Who cares how someone talks! Beats the drunked up or drugged up crew we hear now. The MOST BORING personalities that ever sat there with absolutely no opinions of anything. Whatever they want together in always yes. No research no what if’s no but’s…… boooooring and WRONG !!!!!!

Max if only you could be so eloquent and concise when you speak. That was very well written.

Great thoughts Max-I hope you are considering running for local office again. Our city needs you.

Hard to love a country that is so confused and divided.

We voted to keep the status quo ante bellum.

We owe our division in this country to first the institution of education who teaches different facts then history presents us.

Second we owe the Media for the editorializing of the daily news and leaves no truth on any issue for anyone.

I find it hard to love a country that has become the European model of Germany just before the second world war!

Max, I am not so romantic.

Then move. Go to your utopian country that’s full of butterflies and rainbows. No one is forcing you to live in this country.

that’s a typical week answer,”then move”. That’s what losers do, winners try to make where they are better, rather than just forfeit and move. It still doesn’t mean you have to like where you are at. I to am dissapointed in the direction our country has taken, for quite some time actually.

@Mike Peterson During Vietnam the war supporters started the love it or leave it slogan to anyone that dared disagree with them on the war. I believe this was the begining of the divide that still exists today. While the rich were going to college the poor and minorities were going to the front lines. People said no this isn’t fair and we are going to do something about it. After the draft ended it turned into a fight for economic fairness.

@annonymous, that is what I am saying. I don’t like the love it or leave it attitude. I don’t care what side you are on, you have the right to voice your opinion and try to change things. MC supporter is calling out people for being crybabies if they don’t like the way the election turned out, I say they are just excersizing their rights.

The president was reelected because he is ending the wars, helping the uninsured and making the rich pay more for all they take from this country. Telling the bible thumpers to mind their own business and let God judge them. The day they said their number one job was making Obama a one term president they lost my vote and many more forever. If they continue these tactics instead of doing the job of compromising to make the country better they will become obsolete.

Oh really? Where’s your compromise? All you seem to do is name call and denigrate.

Oh right, compromise is what the other guy has to do.

Great reading from Max. I do not see the country as divided. Romney and Obama are more alike than different.

I would rather have close hard fought election than some type of dictatorial unaminity that other nations have suffered.

@therealfred – that is the way you think but the Republican leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, the one who said that the Republicans job at the beginning of President Obama’s first term was to make sure he didn’t get a 2nd term, is at it again.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/election-2012/wp/2012/11/07/mcconnell-to-obama-move-to-center/

He says in this article that in order for the Senate to compromise, President Obama must move to the middle and THEN Senate Republicans will meet him half way to talk about moving forward. So, in order for the Repubs to do anything, first, we must move to the middle (which is probably way to the right in McConnell’s conservative mind) and then move again to the right to get the compromise started. That is really saying, we aren’t going to do anything unless we get our way.

Max,
Although I don’t always agree with the dish you serve it up in, the actual food for thought that you serve is always spot on.

Max for Mayor of M.C. !!

We haven’t heard sense like that for a year around here! Miss you Weaver.
While I’m at it who can bear the leaders locally one more minute. As the nation spoke today so will Mason City on it’s day.

Mr. Weaver is more in touch with the real people of MC than anyone who has ever been elected to public office to represent our town. He’s smart like a fox, is able to instantly assess any situation, and he always understood the motivations of every person at the table. Had he campaigned last time, he could have won. Max is the most consistently underestimated man in north Iowa politics. I bet we’ve not heard the last of Mr. Weaver, and that’s a good thing for the good people of Mason City.

So re-election begins…good luck Max.
