Phil, I ran out of space. Have you ever shot a Barrett? They are awesome. But at 5 grand and 5 bucks a round you are right about one thing. They are above my salary. How about your’s?
If guys can afford $100,000 Harley’s then $5K isn’t that much. No, I’ve never shot one. I am curious whether one could penetrate an earth packed R20 truck tire though. I’m going to be doing some ballistics tests on various tires and firearms to see how bullet resistant they are at various distances and calibers.
If you are talking about a barrets, a truck tire would be like butter since they are made to go through an engine block.
I’m talking about a fully packed tire with dirt, clay, loam etc. Would a Barrett go through an earth packed wall of tires?
You tell me, if a 50 cal can go through 8 inches of cement, would it go through a tire filled with dirt?
A tire PACKED tight with dirt. And the shot would be entering horizontally through the tread, the packed dirt and out the other side. My prediction is the dirt would slow it down and trap it. Vulcanized tire rubber is really strong also, especially thick truck tires. I don’t know though, without actually trying it. Bring yours over and we’ll see what happens. Pawn that 4×4 sitting in your driveway and get one if you don’t have it already.

Blondie, according to Department of Labor in all 50 states “tipped employees” may be paid less than the minimum wage by their employer so long as their tips and wages combined are equal to or exceed the states mimimum. In Iowa an employee accounts for their tips and the employer makes up the difference.
Questions or concerns can be addressed to the Regional Offce of the DOL in Des Moines. They are very receptive to hearing from anyone concerned about wage fairness.

Wen, I was just surprised to see you and Big Country showing up to comment. The hatchet is buried. I was just ribbing you in my own pseudo-intellectual way. No harm intended. I was going for laughs. I’m sure you do know a lot about guns. I just bite on key terms to appear as though I know, but it’s all an illusion. However, the 2nd Amendment conundrum that I described IS very real, and presents an interesting brain challenge to law enforcement concerning preemptive strikes. 🙂

Does anyone out there know what the Cities total payout (tax payer money)for hosting RAGBRAI was. I think that I read that the city put $30 grand up front, but I also heard that there was unlimited overtime for city employees given, and some of them were out at 3 in the morning. Just wondering…
@Allen-I have not heard, but I am sure they are trying to bury it so we don’t find out. I never made a penny off it. Did you? Hell of return on our investment wasn’t it?
The PGI event could be similar. I do know that a lot of police overtime was required. I was told that (once again) hotel-motel tax revenues covered that expense. I think that as there was a large influx of persons into the city, it was likely a fair trade. Could be a problem later, though, since the library will need a large budget amendment since the city council stiffed it in the last budget cycle, and that fund can go to the mcpl.
The actual implementation for all practical purposes of the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms is very contentious business. Most people believe in theory it should exist and be protected…however to actually exercise that right beyond merely “keeping and bearing” is open to debate and controversy. The Constitution fails to outline the specifics of the actual use of firearms and literally confines it to possession. There are MYRIAD situations in which defensive postures are needed.
Sometimes to adequately wage defense, offensive measures should be employed: case in point: long range rifles w/scopes. Consider a contentious situation between rural neighbors in wooded areas. If a neighbor is seen on his property using his scoped sniper rifle to place the other neighbor within his ‘sights’, does the first neighbor have the right to preemptive fire upon that neighbor before he is able to launch his shot? Obviously the distances achievable by rifles is of concern.
Laws state that a person has the right to defend themselves on their property from attackers who would intend to do them great bodily harm or death, but doesn’t specifically take into consideration the art and science of ‘sniping’. Castle Doctrines typically account for breaking and entering scenarios. However, great threat and death can occur from distances due to the technology of these high powered rifles. I wonder how a court would treat such a scenario? Does a person need to….
wait for a shot to occur, and risk being murdered before anything can be done? It’s also problematic to prove that a neighbor shooting long distances actually was shooting towards a neighbor without ballistic or video evidence. Who has time or money to set all that up? If I were to use a spotting scope to discover that a neighbor of mine was placing me in his rifle scope…what legal recourse would I have? It truly gives the advantage to the attacker.
Phil, I don’t know about legal recourse, but I would duck. I’m thinking for all practical purposes, the 2nd Amendment was written so the citizens of the US, could protect themselves from a corrupt government, or problems caused by a corrupt government. And in my mind, from the way things are happening in the US now, having to protect myself and family, might not be far off.
Allen, the problem with “ducking” is by the time you hear the crack of the rifle, you’re already potentially laying on the ground gravely wounded or dead from a bullet. If the guy misses, then of course you have grounds for recourse…but that’s IF HE MISSES. The point is that you’re vulnerable, and traditional home invasion scenarios don’t apply with long range situations. I’m actually building a rubber wall of tires to protect myself because the situation is becoming quite volatile.
btw…I support the protection of peaceful society, and abhor any insinuation or use of violence as a means to an end. However, in the case of African American Slave Descendants or oppressed people I do give deference and sympathy. But for most law abiding peaceful Iowans, absolutely I defend your right to protect yourself from untoward infringement or violent attack. I get along with 4/5 of my neighbors. Iowans are for the most part good people. We have difficulties before us.

Maybe your problem is you don’t understand I’m protecting both sides of the argument. I recognize white European rights, but I also recognize Black anger at having been enslaved and oppressed for 400+ years. The best case scenario is SEPARATION and REPARATIONS. No, what I’ve been saying is that blacks should have their own community, own governance, and own culture. Whites owe them this much. The focus has been on integration, but the real focus should be on reparations, and recompense for the abhorrent act of 400 years of slavery. They deserve special consideration is my point. Karma has to be PAID.
I feel that if a special territory were set up, with full support of the Federal Government, that perhaps a homeland could be established where the wrongs of the past could fully and adequately be addressed. Not all Taco Bells are crap. I ate at one in Frisco, Colorado once, and it was like eating at a 3 star restaurant. All the same items, but prepared MUCH better and perhaps with better ingredients. Interesting the entire place had Hispanic workers. The place in Clear Lake and Mason City is full of trashy drug headed workers. Whomever owns that restaurant hires lowballs to work there.

It’s still here. Just use the search bar. I wouldn’t doubt that he was on something that night. And if he really did have a psychotic illness than any drugs or alcohol would effect the illness. It’s upsetting that he did not have a jury trial. There’s a reason. They knew the judge would let him go. I wouldn’t doubt that he doesn’t even serve his full 30 days evaluation. But that’s Mason City for ya. If that would have been you or I, we would be in prison.
So far, we haven’t learned of a motive for the killing, so in my opinion the insanity ruling was the correct one.
Two drugs that come to mind that may cause psychosis are meth and common legal antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc.
I recently watched a documentary where a supposedly very loving father stabbed his twin daughters to death after being on Zoloft for only a week. He’s serving life in prison but it’s being appealed. Justice was not served in his case.

Regarding the Gov debate let me say I am not particularly enamored with Branstad or his keepers. Frankly I think he has been in office so many years he thinks another term is his birthright. That said I don’t think Hatch really has much to offer but the same old tired talking points. Now, while I think unions serve as an obstacle in the race to the bottom of wages and benefits for the common worker, his support for reopening the girls home with 100 workers for 30 “inmates?” is just plain…

@Impartial-I did not see the debate but I did read it. From what I read Hatch has changed nothing. His whole program is based on attacking Branstad with nothing substantial behind it. It is the democrats way of politics, mislead and attack and lie to try to discredit your opponent. From what I read he just wants to spend more tax money.

It is strange that everyone loves to jump on these things with their opinion before all of the truth is known. Now it comes out that the kid may have attacked the officer after a strong arm robbery. That would make him a criminal and resisting arrest, which would mean the officer was just protecting himself. I would say to wait before passing judgement. As for Sharpton and the other race baiters that are there spreading hate, they should be the ones shot. Then we could celebrate.

Yes Maybe, I read it. I’ve actually read that before. I did lots of research on the pros and cons when I was concerned about rubber tire toxicity. IN the end, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. I personally don’t think there are many negatives if any. Forget about that $150,000 price tag. That’s bullshit. A 16 x 16 single U module can be built for around $5,000 if you find your recyclables and do the work yourself. It won’t be fancy, but it will be survivable.
I watched about 5 minutes of the video when it occurred to me, if I was trying to make a point about something, if I looked hard enough I could find a video that expressed my point of view. All I have to say about this video was I never heard of the guy, he wasn’t funny at all, and most of all it took you long enough to actually find someone that shares your viewpoint.
I heard tonight that Mercy told their employees that they was going to keep it closed so the people would use their money to go sit in the fair grounds. Better idea is to charge at the entrance $5 a car and give that to the fair grounds. They are paying for a couple security guards so why not charge and let people save a few bucks and enjoy the show. Our community leaders are messed up in the head. Fun verses criminal activity. Guess which one always wins.
Matt what the hell is the story on Mercy closing off their parking lot so we cant go watch the fire works. All the fricken money they get from people and they wont let us park and watch fireworks. What a piss poor employer for Mason city.
@2oldtofat-If it is like it has been in past years they reserve the parking for Mercy employees and their family’s only. They even set up a food tent I believe. It is their lot and there is not much that can be done about it.
I don’t think it has anything to do with Mercy I thinks it’s PGI. Didn’t Target get in trouble for leaving their parking lot open last time it was here.
Why would Target get into trouble? It’s a great event, but the grandstands aren’t big enough to accommodate everyone that’s interested in seeing the fireworks. And it’s also pretty pricey. Tickets were $10 in advance and $15 at the gate of the grandstands. That’s pretty high for a family.

@JMO: I hope you weren’t referring to me as one of the “3”. My God man, I am practically begging for people to comment and liven this place up. I’ve never called anyone a Troll, and welcome virtually all interaction and discussion; even the negative stuff-I laugh at most of it. I find it a bit like magic really: you put some letters and words into a hat, stir it around, wait a bit, and “shazam”, a response comes back like a rabbit. More discussion is what NIT needs, not less.

@Don’t buy-I have heard a rumor from someone who probably knows that most of his inventory belongs to Wheelman Auto and hs just gets a commission.

Apparently he puts ‘brake fluid’ in the transmission of the cars that have transmission problems. It covers up the issue long enough where he is not reliable. One of these days someone will get hurt from one of his cars then people will see how honest he really is.
Back in the day they used to put sawdust or even oatmeal in the old manual transmissions. It would quite them down to sell them but after they had run awhile they would get hot and burn the stuff out. I didn’t realize that they were still doing stuff like that today. Thank you for the INFO.

I received my property tax bill. It went up more than $350.00 a year. After picking myself up off the floor I started wondering if the fact that I’ve received my bill means the assessor has already assessed my place? The assessed value didn’t go up even one penny. In other words, my place isn’t worth any more than it was, but I get the privilege of paying $350.00+ more in taxes. What am I getting for that?

Check you statement over a little closer. Take a look at what each taxing entity is getting. City, County and School District. I realize our consolidated taxes went up, but by looking at each one separately, you can see the amount they levied.

Here’s a rant from me. I was at State And Federal today and saw a park dept. truck parked in the mall plaza. As I sat at the stop sign I watched two park employees picking something up in the plaza. I asked one of the guys what they were picking up, and he said, cigarette butts. What the hell, I thought. When did the plaza become a park, and why should the park dept. be doing that. Wouldn’t money be better spent maintaining our parks then picking up cigarette butts. Let the business owners do…

I have a couple friends on the police force and what they said was if they are not on a call and see a person throw a butt out the window more times than not they will stop them and give them a ticket.
I have to agree with this. Throwing disgusting ciggy butts out of a car window is one of my biggest pet peeves. Police should ticket these people, no question about it.
When I lived in Arizona during the summer, if you threw a butt out and the cops saw you it was a mandatory at least 500.00 fine.

When I lived in Prescott az I had to go to a job site, through the Yavapai national forest when it was on fire, fire on both sides of the road, very scary.
I agree with this one. It is one of my pet peeves. It seems like every other person who comes down the street throws their buts on the ground for someone else to clean up.
Not sure why it was park employees, but pretty sure the plaza is still legally Federal Avenue, so it would still be city’s responsibility. Business owners are supposed to keep sidewalks in front of their stores clean. Problem is, the number of empty storefronts!

@Aqsa-Possibly that is because Hamas hides their rockets and command centers in civilian buildings. They use civilians as human shields. I noticed on my morgage bill there is a charge every month for PMI insurance. What the heck is that? I pay insurance on my house and this is also on my bill. My girlfriend and I just got moved in and are watching our money, now this. I feel Like we are being ripped off.

It is normally added to your payment when you owe more than 80% of the appraised value of your property. By law it must be removed when you owe less than 78% of the property’s appraised value. Good defensive counsel costs money. The family sticking by the accused , definitely helps his case as opposed to them wanting him locked up for murder. From what I hear, he has been sick for sometime and trying to live with it. Only by the trial will a glimpse into this mysterious world be possible.

I only delete comments that are way off-topic, total attacks, or that I think detract from the discussion. I also might delete your comment if it just strikes my fancy to do so. 99.9% of comments stay. Sometimes, people report comments they do not like, and most of the time, if a comment gets two or more reports, I leave it deleted. I give people tons of leeway here; you won’t find this luxury on the other local news sites. If you’re mad that your comment was deleted, it was probably because you did a poor job of communicating.
