CHARLES CITY — A Charles City man previously sentenced to prison for a violent attack in which police said he beat and choked a victim before stealing a pickup truck is back in trouble with the law, this time facing a stalking charge after police investigated allegations of ongoing harassment.

Kristopher Hugh Viers, 43, of Charles City, was arrested Sunday, October 4, 2026, after officers with the Charles City Police Department responded to the 600 block of 3rd Avenue at approximately 7:59 PM.

Police said officers were investigating a report of ongoing harassment. Their investigation resulted in Viers being arrested for first-offense stalking.

Viers (pictured at top) was booked into the Floyd County Jail at 9:58 PM that evening. Jail custody records indicate he was released on bond at 11:36 AM Monday, October 5.

Judge issues no-contact order, sets $2,000 bond

Iowa District Court records reveal that Viers made his initial court appearance October 5, one day after his arrest.

Magistrate Ann M. Troge established bond at $2,000 cash or surety and issued a no-contact order in connection with the new stalking allegation.

Court records indicate the no-contact order was mailed to the protected party and transmitted to law enforcement dispatch.

Viers also submitted an application for court-appointed legal counsel.

On October 6, Lederman Bail Bonds filed a surety bond and accompanying power-of-attorney documentation with the court.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 11:45 AM before a magistrate.

Previous violent attack sent Viers to prison

The newest arrest adds another chapter to a criminal history previously documented by NorthIowaToday.com.

In September 2019, Charles City police investigated a violent confrontation involving Viers and another person.

According to police accounts reported by NIT, Viers confronted a victim on September 9, 2019, beating and choking the individual before stealing a pickup truck and fleeing.

An arrest warrant was issued, and Charles City police located Viers the following evening, September 10, at approximately 7:54 PM in the 200 block of 1st Avenue.

Viers initially faced serious criminal charges, including first-degree theft and willful injury causing serious injury, both felonies.

The case ultimately ended with Viers pleading guilty to reduced charges of second-degree burglary and assault causing injury.

He received concurrent prison sentences of 10 years and five years.

NorthIowaToday.com reported the outcome in its January 9, 2020, story, Violent attack lands Charles City man in prison for up to 10 years.

Earlier encounters with law enforcement

Viers’ encounters with law enforcement stretch back even further.

In April 2014, NIT reported his arrest in Charles City while he was wanted in New Hampton. He was subsequently transferred to the Chickasaw County Jail.

That incident was covered in NIT’s April 26, 2014, report, Wanted New Hampton man arrested in Charles City.

Later that year, NIT reported another arrest involving allegations that Viers had strangled a victim.

The October 28, 2014, report, Chickasaw County man arrested for allegedly strangling his victim, documented those earlier allegations. The available information does not establish the final disposition of that case.

Latest stalking complaint raises new questions

Police have not disclosed the identity of the alleged victim in the October 4 stalking investigation or provided a detailed account of the conduct that led to Viers’ arrest.

Authorities have also not publicly explained how long the alleged harassment had been occurring or whether the latest complaint has any connection to his previous criminal cases.

The filing of a no-contact order means the new case has already resulted in court-imposed restrictions, although the specific terms of that order were not included in the available docket summary.

Viers remains out of custody pending further court proceedings.

He is presumed innocent of the latest stalking allegation unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
