MCCALLSBURG, IOWA – Former officials in this small Iowa town are facing criminal charges for financial shenanigans.

The Story County Sheriff’s Office filed criminal charges on former McCallsburg Mayor, Chris Erickson, and former City Clerk, Jennifer Heithoff. This investigation began as a result of a state audit report in April, 2020 indicating concerns with certain financial transactions.

The investigation revealed Erickson owed a total of $2,138.03 for water utility bills during a period between September of 2017 through July of 2019. During this time period, Heitfoff adjusted Erickson’s account giving the appearance of the balance being paid. Subsequent to Heithoff resigning, this amount was zeroed out. Erickson was the only city official known to have access to the billing software during this time.

The investigation also revealed Heithoff was claiming over twice the amount of hours she was authorized to work and provided no documentation to the City. Heithoff also claimed fraudulent mileage reimbursements. Erickson signed Heitfoff’s payroll and mileage reimbursement checks.

Erickson and Heithoff have been charged with the following offenses:

Felonious Misconduct in Office, Iowa Code 721.1(1), Class D Felony
Fraudulent Practice, Iowa Code 714.10, Class D Felony
Tampering with Records, Iowa Code 715A.5, Aggravated Misdemeanor
