MASON CITY – A Mason City bar had its liquor license seized by police – but brazenly served booze anyway.

Mason City police tell NIT that on Wednesday, the Iowa Alcohol and Beverage agency “asked us to serve an immediate liquor license suspension to Tailgaters Bar,” located at 627 South Federal Avenue.

“We did so around 1:30 PM, including us taking physical possession of the liquor license,” police explained.

However, Tailgaters Bar apparently thought that they could still serve booze without the license – but police were not fooled.

“Last night, around 9:00 PM, one of our officers noticed they were serving alcohol and we had not been notified that the suspension had been lifted. Owners and employees were questioned about serving alcohol without a valid liquor license in violation of the suspension that had just been issued a few hours prior. Officers told them this new violation was being reported to the Iowa Alcohol and Beverage agency and they must stop selling alcohol until the prior suspension had been resolved. Staff agreed to comply.”

Thursday, police say, “Tailgaters did get their prior suspension lifted and are allowed to serve alcohol.”

But the case is not yet closed.

“Last night’s liquor violation was reported today to the Iowa Alcohol and Beverage agency,” police told NIT. “No sanctions have been issued yet by (them). No charges have been filed at this time but the matter is being reviewed here as well.”

NIT will update the situation when new developments arise.

  1. I doubt anybody making comments knows what the suspension was about. It may have been something simple like some paper work not filed on time. Making comments without the facts can
    hurt businesses.

    1. I agree with your statement that it might have been something simple that got their liquor license suspended but the fact remains that Tailgaters though they were above the law and continued to sell liquor after their licenses was suspended. That reeks of arrogance.

  2. Lots of fights and trouble in that bar. If they can’t keep control it should be shut down. Nothing wrong with people having a couple of drinks to relax. But, when they turn aggressive it is a different situation.

    1. Nice blanket statement. Name a “Classy” bar in town besides 1910. I guess the Financial Advisors, Real Estate agents, Contractors, Insurance agents, and local business owners who frequent there are trash. YOU stay classy douche.

  3. It all depends which bar it is is in violation. Certain bars in town would be shut down for a month for pulling this stunt, tailgaters will probably have nothing at all happened to them.

  4. Why do we even have laws. No one abides by them. Just ignore them, use illegal drugs, cross the borders illegally, sell booze without a license. SMDH.
